Freya managed to hold back her tears. After a last look at Carter, she stood and went to check on Edward and Harper.
Once she was gone, Carter found he couldn’t sit still either. He rose and walked to the window, his hands clenched into tight fists.
Damn the Gellar family! After all these years of acquaintance, they’d sink to this over a minor spat. How low.
His angry gaze fixed on the world outside the window. Suddenly, Ethan’s figure from yesterday came to mind.
That man had carried himself with a certain presence. But he was supposedly Arabella’s brother–which didn’t add up at all….
Weren’t they all supposed to be idle drifters?
How could they possibly have brought down the Macdonald family overnight?
Had his initial investigation been wrong?
After turning it over, Carter decided he needed to see Arabella. No one else in the Macdonald family was willing or able to wade into this mess now. Arabella was the only connection he might still use. He could also try to learn more about her current family situation.
With that thought, he headed to Edward’s room.
“Edward, did your mother come by earlier?” Carter asked.
“She was here, and she seemed very upset. Dad, what’s the real situation with the business?” Edward had been so agitated by the news of the bankruptcy that his throat still felt raw.
“It’s very serious. We may lose everything.
“Edward, have you been in contact with Arabella this whole time?” Carter planned to start his inquiries here.
“No. Mom took my phone before. I only reconnected with Arabella yesterday.”
“Why do you ask, Dad? Do you need to speak with her about something?” Edward sensed Carter was probing for information about Arabella.
After all, Carter hadn’t asked about her when she left the family. It was suspicious that he’d bring her up now.

“Ah, it’s just that with the business collapsing so suddenly, I worry she might be concerned.
“By the way, was that man who came with her yesterday really her biological brother?” Carter asked, keeping his tone casual.
“Yes, that’s what Arabella said. I thought they did resemble each other.”
Then Edward added, more pointedly, “Dad, I get the sense Arabella is doing well now. Please don’t let her know about the family’s troubles this time. She’s just starting a new life. I don’t want her to worry.”
“Alright, I won’t tell her. You rest now. I’ll go see Harper.” Carter stood and left Edward’s
room.
In the hallway, he frowned, deep in thought.
Judging by the man’s attire yesterday, Arabella’s new family was at least comfortable, if not well–off.
Still thinking, he reached Harper’s door.
Freya was inside, discussing with Harper what to do next. He walked in and looked at them. “Don’t panic. Harper, you stay here with your brother and don’t go anywhere for now. Freya, come out with me.”
Freya looked at him in surprise. “Where could we possibly go at a time like this?”
“Dad’s right. We don’t know if creditors might be waiting outside. It’s not safe for you and Mom to go out,” Harper said anxiously, not fully grasping the situation.
“Don’t borrow trouble. No one’s blocking the doors. We don’t owe money to individuals. But you are not to leave the house, understand?” Carter repeated his warning.
“Okay, I understand. But where are you going?” Even if she couldn’t go, she wanted to know.
“We’re going to see Arabella. Let’s go,” Carter said, sensing her worry.
“What? I’m not going,” Freya said, looking at him in confusion. She’d just driven Arabella away yesterday. Why would they go see her now?
Even bankrupt, Freya felt they were still better off than most. What good could come from visiting Arabella?
Seeing Freya’s reluctance and remembering the unpleasantness from yesterday, Carter decided not to insist she come.
“Fine. Stay home with the children. I won’t be long,” he said, turning toward the stairs.

Seeing him prepare to leave alone, Freya followed him out, disbelief on her face.
“Carter, I honestly don’t understand why you’re going to see that girl.”

Seeing her persistence, Carter felt he had to explain his thinking. “You saw the man Arabella brought yesterday, didn’t you? I suspect her current family has some means. I’m going to find out. If they can help us, maybe the business can be saved.”
Though Carter hadn’t been hands–on with the operations, he was the one who least wanted to see it fail. How else would the family support itself?
“Don’t get your hopes up. I saw right through that man she brought. It was all for show. I can’t believe you’re buying into it,” Freya said helplessly. How could he not see what was so
obvious to her?
