“Everything is fine. You don’t need to concern yourself with my life,” Arabella replied coolly.
It was a little late for him to start showing interest now.
Carter shifted awkwardly, sensing her dismissal. I know I was too wrapped up in the business and didn’t make time for you. Please don’t hold it against me, sweetheart.”
“I’m not holding anything against you,” Arabella said evenly.
And she truly wasn’t.
Carter’s face flushed slightly, but he quickly smoothed his expression back into a smile. “That’s good to hear.”
“By the way, the young man who came with you yesterday–Edward mentioned he’s your brother. Is he employed? Would he like me to put in a word somewhere for him?” Carter ventured, testing the waters.
“No, he keeps busy,” Arabella said.
He’s in a mess himself, yet still putting on this generous act in front of me. How pathetic.
“Well, if he ever needs a connection, just say the word. I can arrange something,” Carter said with forced authority.
“What line of work is he in, actually?” he pressed.
Arabella’s brows drew together slightly as she studied him. He was clearly digging for information about Ethan. Had he figured something out…?
“What he does is his business. But I heard the Macdonald operations have collapsed. Surprised you have the leisure to sit here so long,” Arabella remarked, a faint, knowing smile touching her lips.
Hearing this, Carter’s frown deepened. How did she already know? Word traveled fast…
He’d planned to keep up appearances in front of her, but that seemed pointless now.
Carter managed a strained smile. “I didn’t want to worry you, but I see you’re already informed.”
Then he let a somber expression settle over his face. “You’re right. The family business is finished. Everything has shut down.”

“Arabella… do you have any way to help the family through this?” Carter set aside his pride and asked directly.
Before Arabella could respond, Edward stared at him in disbelief. “Dad, the situation is what it is. What could Arabella possibly do? You’re just putting her in an impossible position.
“I think you’ve said what you came to say. You should go back and be with Mom,” Edward urged, wanting him to leave.
“Don’t try to send me away. Our family was targeted. I don’t trust anyone else right now. I saw your brother yesterday–dressed impeccably, carries himself like someone of substance. Maybe your new family can help. I’m not trying to pressure you. I truly have nowhere else to turn,” Carter said, his tone layered with helplessness.
Watching Carter’s worried act, Arabella replied calmly, “There’s nothing my family or I can do about the Macdonalds‘ troubles. You’d be better off looking elsewhere.”
She truly hadn’t expected this. She’d been careful not to reveal the Hamiltons‘ true standing yesterday.
Yet just because Ethan wore a custom–tailored suit, Carter had still latched onto him. The man had no shame.
A shrewd gleam flickered in Carter’s eyes.
Arabella hadn’t denied that her brother was as well–off as he suspected.
It seemed her brother really did have some means.
Bolstered by this thought, he looked squarely at Arabella. “Arabella, I can tell your brother is a man of resources. If you spoke to him–asked him to help the family for your sake–I believe he would. If he has capital, he could lend enough to restart the company. If not capital… then connections. He could help me find investors…”
Hearing him still clinging to such wild hopes, Arabella let out a soft, cold laugh. “Why would I speak to him? The Macdonalds are nothing to me now. You should solve your own problems.”
She had no interest in continuing this conversation. The Macdonald family had thrown their weight around for years. It was time they faced consequences.
Honestly, Ethan had just beaten her to it. Once she’d recovered her own investments, she would have made them pay in her own way.
Seeing Arabella’s firm refusal, Carter grew agitated. “Arabella, I never treated you poorly all

those years you were with us. How can you stand aside and do nothing now, at a time like this? I wouldn’t be here asking if I had any other choice!”
After all, he’d come to her without even knowing for sure if her family could help. That showed trust, didn’t it?
Arabella met his gaze coolly. “What are you implying? That I should be grateful you think so highly of my family’s supposed influence?”
Provoked, Carter fell back on reminding her of his so–called kindness. “Yes! Arabella, you’d do well to remember who helped you. If I hadn’t tracked down your biological parents, would you be living this comfortable life now? You’d be sharing in our ruin!”
He was almost shouting now.
Arabella’s smile turned icy. “You have the nerve to say that. Since you brought it few things to say myself.”
