Chapter 168: She Broke The Last Time We Pushed Too Hard

"It’s true," Sebastian confirmed, his voice quieter but no less intense. "Same thing is happening to me. Rhen is restless. I couldn’t focus on anything all afternoon. The hunger..." He trailed off, his jaw clenching. "The hunger is going to be unbearable by the time the full moon arrives."

Nicholas said nothing, but his fingers tapped slowly against the wooden arm of his chair, a sign that only his brothers would recognize as him thinking, processing, running calculations.

"So the question becomes," Sebastian continued, moving to lean against the edge of Nicholas’s desk, "how do we not go to her like feral beasts and take what we need? How do we not mark her before she’s even had time to adjust to being here, before she’s had time to understand what any of this means?"

"We mark her now," Lucian said, his voice hard. "We complete the bond, settle the curse, and stop dancing around what she is to us."

"She broke the last time we pushed too hard," Sebastian said flatly, and his voice carried enough weight that Lucian immediately went silent. "She was empty. Gone. It took Agnes holding vigil over her just to make sure she didn’t disappear entirely." He looked directly at his youngest brother. "I won’t do that again."

"Neither will I," Nicholas said quietly.

The words hung in the air between them.

Lucian turned away, his hands clenching into fists at his sides. "So what do you propose? We wait? We pretend we can control this for eight more days, four weeks more if we’re going to be truly patient?" His gold eyes flashed back toward Nicholas, and there was real anguish in them beneath the fury. "Nicholas, I don’t know if I can survive that."

"Then we do this carefully," Nicholas said, his voice settling into the tone of strategic planning. "We observe her for the next three to four days. We watch her responses, her comfort level, her readiness. We determine if she’s actually prepared for the bond or if she’s simply resigned to it."

"And if she is ready?" Sebastian asked.

"Then we mark her before the full moon becomes unmanageable," Nicholas said. "Before the curse makes us lose control completely. But we do it with her understanding, with her consent, with her knowing exactly what she’s agreeing to."

"And if she’s not ready by day four?" This from Lucian, his voice carrying both hope and dread.

"Then we manage the full moon the way we managed it before we found her," Nicholas said, and his tone suggested this was non-negotiable. "Separation. Control. The curse is brutal, but we’ve survived it before."

Sebastian pushed off from the desk, his expression darkening. "But what if we can’t hold back? What if the curse wins before day four? What if one of us loses control around her?"
