She wasn’t sure that was true.
But she nodded anyway.
Kael yanked her back against him and her head dropped back.
She came twice before he finally let her rest.
And both times she hated that she did and couldn’t stop it. The heat didn’t care about fear. It didn’t care about her tears or confusion or the fact that the man currently destroying her wasn’t entirely the man she’d been in this bed with for hours.
The heat had exactly one function and Kael was performing it and her body responded the way it was built to respond.
Both times Kael didn’t slow down or soften or give her a second to breathe.
Both times Sebastian said her name and she heard it and held onto it.
Then Kael brought her back to the bed.
Onto her back.
He came down over her.....and this was the moment that was different. This was the moment that stopped being purely animal. He looked down at her face. Those silver eyes moving over her....her tears, her flushed skin, her hands gripping the sheets, her face that was still looking so scared.
Something moved through his expression.
Still feral. Still ancient. Still nothing like Nicholas’s careful controlled face.
But underneath it....recognition.
Not just her body.
Her.
The way a wolf recognized its mate at a frequency that had no translation into human language. Something that went past want or need or even claim. Something that simply knew.
She looked up at him through her tears.
She was still scared.
But something in her looked back at something in him and knew it too.
He moved inside her. Slower this time. Deeper. His eyes staying on her face.
She felt her hands stop gripping the sheets.
She didn’t decide to reach for him. Her hands just moved. Found his arms. Held on.
He lowered his head.
She knew what was coming.
She could feel it in the way the air changed. In the way Sebastian made a sound behind her that was not quite a word. In the way the heat shifted.....from demanding to something else entirely. Something that felt like completion. Like the last piece of something enormous clicking into place.
She didn’t move.
His mouth found her throat.
And he bit down.
It was not gentle.
It was not romantic.
His teeth broke her skin.
The pain was so bad that she she screamed.....a sound that was nothing like anything she had produced in the days of her heat, nothing like anything she had ever produced in her life...it was raw and loud, tearing out of her throat and through the walls and through the stone and into the estate and beyond it.
The mark bloomed.
Hot. Golden. Pulsing against her skin like something alive.
