“Enough,” Timothy said coldly, pushing her hand away. He looked at Margaret with a headache clearly forming. “You two–are you ever going to stop? Now you’re bringing monsters into it? Stella, I think you’ve actually lost it.”

“Family shame stays in the family,” he went on. “I don’t care how you two fight. But no one speaks about this outside.”

Margaret kept her head down. “I understand, Father. For the sake of our family’s reputation, even if Stella beats me until I can’t walk, I’ll never say a word about it to anyone.”

“That’s ridiculous,” Stella snapped. “When did I ever hit you? You’re the one who hit me.”

She looked like she was about to break.

Margaret said softly, “I know Stella doesn’t like me. But I already gave up the Crown Princess position for her. So why is she still not satisfied? Is it because I was the one by Crown Prince Christopher’s side when things were hardest for him? Does Stella really think he’ll always have a place for me in his heart–and that’s why she keeps coming after me?”

Then she mimicked the look Stella usually gave people. She lowered her head, all pitiful.

“You really don’t need to worry,” she said. “I honestly don’t like Crown Prince Christopher anymore. You can have him. You can have the Crown Princess title, too. I don’t want any of it. I just hope you’ll leave me alone from now on. Winter still hasn’t healed from last time. And me? I was already heavy. Now I’m almost disfigured. I’m really no threat to you at all.”

Stella was furious. “Margaret. You actually have the nerve to say that? Do you have no shame?”

Margaret kept her head low, still looking sad. “If yelling at me makes you happy, then go ahead. No matter what, Father will always take your side. Jasper, too. And Crown Prince Christopher will speak up for you. Even if you killed me, no one would say a word against you. So why make my life so hard?”

She closed her eyes and lifted her chin. “If you haven’t hit me enough, go ahead. I used to fight back just a little, and I’d get sent to the chapel to pray for forgiveness. But now I see the truth. You’re the only one who gets to hit me. The only way I walk away safe is if I don’t fight back at all. So keep going. Hit me until you’re happy.”

Stella’s heart nearly stopped. She stared, eyes wide, unable to believe Margaret could be this shameless.

All my life, I’ve been the one lying about her. When did it become her turn to lie about me?

She clenched her fists. “Margaret, do you have the guts to tell the truth? Do you really think Father is that easy to fool? When he wasn’t here, you were a complete tyrant. So who exactly are you putting on this act for?”

Stella turned to Jasper. “Jasper, why aren’t you saying anything? Look how she’s treating me. This is way too

much.”

Jasper’s eyes narrowed. When he looked at Margaret, there was almost something like pity there.

Stella got even more worked up. “Jasper, I’m talking to you. Did you forget how she treated me while Father was away? Just earlier, she poisoned my chicken soup–you saw it with your own eyes. My stomach hurt so badly. I had to take medicine just to feel better. You remember all of that.

“I went to ask her to stop putting things in my food. And she just attacked me. She beat me up. She was so cruel. So why are you—”

Jasper cut her off coldly, “Enough, Stella. Stop this.”

Stella stepped back, shocked. “Jasper, what are you saying? She’s the one causing trouble…”

“You keep saying the chicken soup was poisoned,” Jasper said. His tone had never been like this before. “Then how come no one else got sick? Just you two?”
