Christopher stood rooted in place, growing angrier by the second. “It’s more than possible. Uncle Theodore keeps to himself most years, yet he went out of his way to come here personally just to fetch a healer. That doesn’t add up. Could it be he’s actually drawn to fat women?”

Roy hurried to calm his frustrations. “You’re overthinking this, Crown Prince Christopher. Prince Theodore has met every kind of woman imaginable–some delicate, some bold, some plain, some beautiful. He’s never lacked company.

“Even if he took a fancy to someone like Ms. Campbell, he would never choose her. Everyone knows your broken engagement left her with a tainted reputation. A woman cast aside by her betrothed would never catch the eye of someone as noble as Prince Theodore.”

His words soothed Christopher’s temper greatly, and his expression softened at last.

“You’re right,” Christopher scoffed. “Margaret is overweight, ill–tempered, and plain–looking. She’s only lucky enough to have saved Uncle Theodore once, which earned her his protection. He’s a man born to greatness–he’d never settle for someone like her. No other man in this realm would want her, save for

As he spoke, a sharp twinge of pain flared in his injured arm.

He sucked in a sharp breath. “She’s grown far too arrogant now. Soon enough, she’ll come crawling back to me on her own.”

Roy stepped forward quickly to steady him. “Rest yourself, Crown Prince Christopher. That unknown assassin struck you down out of nowhere last night with reckless cruelty. When we catch the culprit, they will face the harshest punishment possible.”

“Speak of this to no one,” Christopher warned sharply. “Especially not in front of Stella.”

“I understand.” Roy nodded.

The two walked slowly through the gates of the Prime Minister’s Estate.

The moment they stepped inside, a frail figure threw herself straight into Christopher’s arms.

“I’m so glad you’ve come, Crown Prince Christopher,” Stella sobbed.

Christopher froze in surprise. “Stella, why are you waiting here?”

“I heard you’d arrived, so I came at once,” she whimpered. Her limbs went weak, and she leaned heavily against his chest. “I ran into you the second I got here. Thank God I saw you first, or I don’t think I could’ve even stayed on my feet.”

Christopher still suffered from severe lingering injuries, and he nearly stumbled under her weight. He shot Roy a quick, urgent look.

Roy stepped in at once. “Nadia, help her.”

Nadia hurried over to support Stella from the side.

Stella blinked back tears. “Have I done something wrong to upset you, Crown Prince Christopher?”

“Not at all,” Christopher replied. “My arm has never fully healed. The pain lingers constantly, and I have little strength left.”

He noticed the veil covering her face and frowned. “Why wear a veil inside the estate?”

Christopher reached out, ready to lift the fabric, but Stella bowed her head quickly, covering her face and sobbing nonstop.

Nadia’s eyes filled with tears. “Crown Prince Christopher, Ms. Campbell has beaten Ms. Stella Campbell twice in a row. Each attack left her broken and helpless. Her face is swollen and bruised beyond recognition now.”

Rage flashed across Christopher’s face instantly. “How dare she? I’ll go confront her at once.”

Stella grabbed his arm to hold him back. “It’s useless. Margaret is under Prince Theodore’s protection now. Nothing you say or do will change anything.”

Christopher gritted his teeth. “I refuse to believe Uncle Theodore would let her act with such reckless cruelty.”

Nadia shook her head bitterly. “Prince Theodore has already taken her side. He ordered thirty lashes for Ms. Stella Campbell only moments ago. The guards held back their strength to keep her from dying from the pain, yet she still could not rise for a long time afterward. She would still be bedridden if not for hearing you’d come.”

Stella swayed unsteadily on her feet, looking frail and on the verge of collapse.
