Rejected by the Crown Prince? I Married His Uncle
Chapter 142 You Are Merely His Second Choice
Margaret sat inside the carriage with a blank, unreadable expression.

Christopher’s face burned bright red with embarrassment. “One way or another, I was wrong to misunderstand you. Still, Jasper is the one truly to blame. He misled me from the very start and twisted the truth to turn me against you. Of course, you are not entirely blameless either–your usual attitude hardly helps matters.
“Set the past aside. Mr. Kingston says only you can purge the poison in my veins quickly. His methods would take far longer to work. You understand what I mean.”
Christopher clenched his fists, his tone dark and strained. “I came looking for you last night, but an unknown assassin ambushed me out of nowhere and beat me badly. My men searched all night and found no trace of the attacker. That is why I arrived late today, nothing more.”
The carriage rumbled to life and pulled away. The people inside paid him no mind, as if his words fell on empty ears.
Christopher dared not block Theodore’s carriage, no matter how furious he grew.
He called out loudly after them, “Margaret, do you hear me? I’ll admit your acupuncture skills are genuine now. Step down and come with me, and we can make things right between us.”
His voice faded into the distance as the carriage traveled farther away.
Inside the carriage, Theodore spoke in a cold, calm tone. “He would never have come for you if Mr. Kingston could ease his suffering. You are merely his second choice.”
“I know,” Margaret replied flatly.
Theodore lifted an eyebrow. “You do?”
“I do.” Margaret nodded faintly. “He ordered twenty harsh lashes for me without a second thought, tricked by lies that I’d harmed him. Yet now that he knows Stella is the one who’s caused him endless pain, he lets her go unpunished. That alone says everything.”
She spoke without a hint of emotion. “It is not pride that stops him from apologizing openly. He simply thinks bowing to me is humiliating. He only swallowed his pride because his pain had grown unbearable. His suffering is self–inflicted. Why should I forgive him just because he finally said a few empty words of regret?”
A subtle softness settled over Theodore’s stern features after hearing her reply. “You are wise to see the truth.”
Margaret stared at him in quiet surprise. “Did you come all this way just to fetch me today, Prince Theodore?”
An awkward silence fell at her sudden question, and Margaret’s cheeks heated up.
Why would I ask something so silly?

“I did,” Theodore answered simply. “You said my poison needs daily treatment, yet you’ve delayed your visits for far too long.”
Margaret fell silent.
This conversation is getting more uncomfortable by the minute.
She decided to drop the topic entirely.
Back outside the Prime Minister’s Estate, Christopher seethed with unbridled rage.
He would have dragged Margaret away by force if Theodore had not been present.
Helpless to act, he could only watch her leave with Theodore, and the frustration gnawed at him deeply.
Roy stepped carefully to his side from a short distance away. “They’re long gone, Crown Prince Christopher. Let us head back to the Prime Minister’s Estate to rest for a while.”
Christopher squeezed his fists tight. “What is Uncle Theodore thinking? Why would he let someone like Margaret ride in his carriage? She’s as round and heavy as a pig.”
He’d meant to say she was plain and unattractive, unworthy of Theodore’s noble status.
Roy replied cautiously, “Ms. Campbell does carry a few extra pounds, but she’s lost a great deal of weight lately. She is nowhere near as heavy as you claim.”
Christopher let out a cold scoff. “She’s slimmed down a little, yet her face is still round and plump.”
“You see her every day, Crown Prince Christopher,” Roy said gently. “Small changes like weight loss are hard to notice up close.”
He shifted topics quickly. “That matters little right now. Your injured arm still needs her healing treatment above all else.”
