Margaret snapped back to her senses and hurried after him. “I was thinking about our last trip to find the herbal catalyst. We finally caught that snake, yet we never got its gall before…”

“It’s been taken care of,” Theodore cut in. “You need not worry about the catalyst. I’ve been taking the prepared medicine following your prescription these past two days.”

Relief washed over Margaret at once. “I’m glad you’ve kept up with the treatment. No wonder you look far better than before.”

They said little for the rest of the walk.

Soon after, Theodore prepared for his medicinal bath.

This time, Margaret was able to give him his acupuncture treatment without interruption.

Midway through the session, she brought up Maplewood Village.

Theodore answered her patiently, “The whole matter has been fully resolved. Everyone involved in the crimes has been arrested, and all captive women have been set free. A small group chose not to leave the village, and they’ve been brought to Breston. They’re here today.”

Margaret finished the acupuncture treatment in a rush the second she heard this. “Which ones are here?”

Theodore’s brows drew tight. “Your technique is rather harsh today.”

Margaret forced an awkward smile. “I’ll go gentler next time.”

Theodore called for Cyan, and Margaret was led out of his bedchamber.

As she stepped into the courtyard, two familiar figures rushed straight toward her.

“Ms. Campbell, it’s such a relief to see you again.”

“We’re overjoyed to find you safe and well.”

It was Julie and Lisa.

Each girl took one of Margaret’s hands, their eyes bright with earnest gratitude.

She smiled softly, “I’m glad to see you both safe, too.”

Julie pulled her into a tight hug. “You saved our lives. We would have died in that village without you.”

Lisa dropped to one knee at once. “We came here today to thank you for everything. We spoke harshly of you once, not knowing your noble status, and we beg your forgiveness.”

Julie followed her right away. “We owe you our lives and our honor. We’ve sworn to serve you for the rest of our days to repay your kindness to every woman in our village.”

Margaret hurried to lift them up. “Please, stand. There’s no need for this.”

Lisa said firmly, “You are a lady of high standing. We never dared hope to meet you, but your kindness- and Prince Theodore’s mercy–gave us this chance.”

‘Our lives belong to you now,” Julie added fervently. “We’ll do anything you ask/We’re willing to be your maids. We only wish to stay by your side and repay you.”

Margaret let out a helpless laugh at their determined gazes. “I have all the help I need. You don’t owe me anything. Go back to your village and rebuild your lives.”

Lisa shook her head sadly. “Hardly anyone remains in the village now. Zoe, Amber, and all the others left long ago. There’s nothing left for us there.”

Julie bit her lip. “We have no way to earn a living, and we cannot read or write. We have nowhere else to go. Please, take us in.

‘You’re the kindest person we’ve ever known. Anyone else would have run to save themselves. You risked everything to protect us and keep us unharmed. We’ll devote our whole lives to you. We ask for nothing more than a roof over our heads and a simple meal each day.”

Margaret’s heart ached with sympathy as she listened.

Just then, Theodore stepped out of his chamber. She glanced toward him silently, seeking his guidance.
