Chapter 164 What Just Happened?

Stella held out her hand in a flustered rush. “Put that aside for now. Fetch the antidote at once–Father has eaten the poisoned pastry by accident.”

Nadia stared blankly at her. “There is no antidote. When you bought this poison for Margaret, you specifically chose one with no known cure. The merchant warned us from the start that its antidote is incredibly rare, priceless even if you could find it. You even praised how perfect this poison was back then.”

Stella tuned out the rest of her words completely.

I’m finished.

Without an antidote, Father will slowly grow fat just like Margaret.

He’ll figure out the whole truth sooner or later.

Stella said anxiously, “Go find one anyway. Offer any amount of gold to get it.”

Nadia bowed respectfully. “I understand.”

With that, Nadia hurried off in a rush.

Stella stumbled unsteadily out of the dining hall and wandered aimlessly until she reached the outside of the study.

She paused at the door and overheard Jasper and Timothy talking inside.

Timothy said in a furious tone, “This whole mess is clearly Margaret’s fault. We all see it plainly enough- her greed for sweets is what made her fat in the first place, yet she insists on blaming Stella for it. What sense does that make? If Prince Theodore didn’t favor her, I would have made her kneel in the ancestral shrine long ago.

“Neither of my two daughters ever gives me a moment of peace. Tell me, how have you handled things as of late, Jasper?”

Jasper tried to calm him. “Please do not anger yourself, Father. There may be some misunderstanding here. Margaret is not the kind of girl who would falsely accuse Stella without reason.”

Timothy frowned sharply, “You always used to stand up for Stella. Why do you only defend Margaret now? Do you really believe such a ridiculous lie?”

Jasper replied quietly, “I trust your judgment above all else, Father.”

Timothy snorted, “Enough. Leave me be and stop pestering me.”

Jasper nodded. “As you wish.”

Timothy warned firmly, “Treat Stella well. She will be Crown Princess before long–you understand what that means.”

Jasper answered, “I do, Father.”

Moments later, Jasper walked out of the study.

Stella quickly turned to slip away, but Jasper caught up to her at once.

He asked in a low voice, “Stella, did you really tamper with the marchpane tartlet?”

Stella froze for a second, then burst into aggrieved tears. “Jasper, I don’t know why you suddenly distrust me like this. If this is about that bowl of chicken soup, I can explain everything…”

Jasper cut her off, “There’s no need for explanations. We both know the truth in our hearts.

“You may not realize it yourself, but your jealousy grows stronger every day. I don’t believe you’d ever do something so cruel, yet I can’t deny you cry far too easily over trivial things.”

With those words, Jasper turned and walked away.

Left alone, Stella could no longer contain her rage. She lifted her foot and kicked a nearby tree hard.

Damn it! Damn it!

Margaret! Damn you!

Nadia hurried back to her side. “I’ve sent men out to search everywhere for the antidote. Let us hope they find it soon. Please stay calm–things are not yet beyond saving.”

Stella snapped bitterly, “Not beyond saving? Everyone in the family already assumes I’ll be Crown Princess. Yet Crown Prince Christopher has made it clear I can only ever be his Royal Consort. I haven’t dared tell Father and the others the truth. My wedding next month was supposed to make me the most admired lady in Breston–instead, it will turn me into the kingdom’s laughingstock. How is this not a disaster?”

Nadia soothed her. “Nothing is set in stone yet. There is still room to change things. If you can win Crown Prince Christopher’s heart back…”

Stella ground her teeth in frustration. “The problem is not him. It’s Queen Norma.”

Nadia’s eyes lit up with an idea. “Don’t lose hope. Queen Norma’s birthday feast is only a few days away. Prepare well for it, and you can surely change her opinion of you. You still have a chance.”

At those words, Stella finally calmed down.

She’s right. This is my only chance left.

The next morning, Margaret went to the Ducal Palace early as usual to give Theodore his acupuncture treatment and draw out the poison from his body.

Once the acupuncture session ended, she hurried out of his private chambers as if rushing off to tend to something urgent.

The sun shone bright and warm that day.
