Chapter 21 A House of Cards
“And don’t come begging me for help later. I don’t want credit, and I don’t want your problems.”
Jasper watched her retreating figure and shook his head, disappointment etched on his face.

But Stella said pitifully, “Jasper, please don’t blame Margaret. It’s clear she still cares about His Highness. Why else would she have rushed over to tear off his clothes and stick needles in him earlier…”
“She dared to strip me?”
Christopher’s face flushed with rage. In his agitation, he accidentally aggravated his wound and winced in pain.
Stella looked at him with pitiful eyes. “No, no, she didn’t—I’m not saying she—”
“What happened to your face?”
Christopher suddenly asked.

Stella’s hand flew to her cheek. Five finger–shaped marks bloomed red and swollen against her skin.
Jasper stepped forward. “Did she hit you again? Why didn’t you say anything earlier?”
Tears spilled down Stella’s cheeks, making the marks stand out even more. “No–she didn’t–please don’t
Her crying was heart–wrenching. Each sob made the handprint on her face even more prominent! Christopher shot to his feet in fury. “Come! I’ll demand justice for you! She dared to strip me and stick me with needles, and while I was unconscious, she laid hands on you? She’s gone too far…”
“Please, Your Highness–she’s my sister–I can’t bear to see you fight-”
“That’s exactly why she keeps walking all over you.” Christopher’s voice burned with righteous fury. “I almost felt sorry for her earlier. Almost thought I’d misjudged her. But this? This is who she really is.”
Jasper clenched his fists in fury. “She truly grows more excessive by the day! To lay hands on you right under our noses–don’t go near her anymore. Keep your distance.”
Stella cried pitifully, “Your Highness, I need to know–has your engagement truly been dissolved?”
Christopher’s anger flared. “Of course! She wrote the dissolution agreement herself. With her behavior, I’m more than happy to oblige!”
A flicker of calculation passed through Stella’s eyes, but she said, “Your Highness, could you reconsider? It’s precisely because you signed that agreement that she’s become so erratic. This shows she doesn’t truly want to end the engagement. That’s why she…”
She touched her cheek again, wincing. The implication was clear: If the engagement stands, she’ll keep hurting me.

He quickly steadied Stella. “Stella, don’t be afraid. She wrote that dissolution agreement, and I made the decision! I originally considered our past feelings and was reluctant to truly end things. I thought if she tore up the agreement, I might still accept her. But now, she’s grown even worse–relying on our past connection to act so outrageously, tormenting you again and again. I’ve had enough!
“Tonight, I’ll tell my mother. She’ll petition the Emperor. You’ll be the Crown Princess. Let’s see Margaret bully you when you outrank her.”
Stella said weakly, “Your Highness, please don’t…”
“Enough.” Christopher cut her off. “I’ve been more than generous. She threw it back in my face. She doesn’t get to play victim now.”
“I had two gifts prepared. She doesn’t deserve either. I’ll give them both to you. Let her be jealous. Let her choke on it.”
He glanced toward the door, expecting some reaction.
Surely Margaret couldn’t remain unmoved!
But Margaret was indeed unmoved.
