Chapter 233 Everyone Knows This Story

Megan bit her lip hard. “I truly couldn’t count them all if I tried. Prince Theodore and Ms. Hickman have known each other since childhood–they’ve shared countless meals together over the years.”
At her words, Margaret’s mood sank instantly.
Only yesterday she’d thought their budding relationship was simple and uncomplicated–no grand dramatic twists, no heartbreaking emotional turmoil, not a single rival vying for his affection.
It was quiet, steady, and natural, like any ordinary young couple.
It felt as if they were just regular people, too.
From acquaintance to intimacy, they grew close and came to know each other little by little.
Like so many lovers in the world, their bond had begun with a faint, gentle fondness.
It left her tangled in thought, yet there was also a spark of quiet relief.
For a moment, she’d even found herself thinking they could take their time getting to know one another properly.
After all, she really did hold feelings for him.
And this plain, calm way of growing close was exactly what she thought love ought to be.
But now, she found she’d been fooling herself all along.
He was the lofty Prince Theodore. Trying to have a simple, quiet courtship with him was nothing but a foolish fantasy.
It had barely been the first day of them agreeing to try, and a rival had already appeared.
Worse still, it seemed the rival had always been there–and she was the one who’d wandered into their story
late.
Margaret fell into a long, heavy silence, barely listening to Megan chattering beside her.
After a long pause, she suddenly asked, “Isn’t today Ms. Hickman’s birthday?”
Megan froze. “How did you know?”
Margaret put on a casual facade. “So his urgent business is rushing over to celebrate her birthday, is it?”
Megan hurried to explain, “I truly don’t know about that–it’s Prince Theodore’s private matter. Please don’t overthink it. He said he’ll be right back, and he will. Do wait here a while longer. I have given orders for the evening meal to be made ready. Once I have walked with you through this garden, we shall take a turn about the other grounds as well. By the time we are done, Prince Theodore should have returned.”
Seeing how flustered she was, Margaret smiled, “Don’t be so nervous. Yes, I like him, but it hasn’t reached the point where I’m hopelessly in love. So even if he really went to celebrate another woman’s birthday, it’s not a big deal. It’s not like I’m going to do anything.”

Megan bit her lip. “Any girl would get angry or jealous, Ms. Campbell.”

“If he went to celebrate someone’s birthday, he’d probably stay there for dinner. There’s really no reason for me to wait around, is there?” Margaret said flatly.)
Megan grew a little anxious. “You are jealous, Ms. Campbell. Please don’t overthink it. Since Prince Theodore said he would come back, he will definitely return to keep you company. Please don’t be angry.”
“I am just the tiniest bit jealous. But compared to Myrna, I’m probably the one who came later. And since nothing substantial has developed between Prince Theodore and me yet, I have no real reason to be upset. Don’t be nervous. I just think it’s boring to stand here waiting like a fool, so I’d rather go back.”
As she spoke, Margaret had already started walking back.
Megan quickly followed. “Back on the battlefield, General Randall once took a blade for Prince Theodore. Everyone knows this story.”
Margaret paused for a moment. “Why bring that up all of a sudden?”
Megan said, “I only want to tell you that on General Hickman’s Estate lives someone who saved Prince Theodore’s life. What’s more, when Prince Theodore first went to war, it was General Randall who led him and accompanied him through his most lost and confused days. Prince Theodore holds General Randall in the highest esteem. So whenever General Randall asks to meet, Prince Theodore almost never refuses.”
She followed quietly behind Margaret. “I say all this to tell you that the reason Prince Theodore grew up as childhood friends with Ms. Hickman is that General Randall.
“And the reason they’ve been able to share countless meals together–most of the time, it was Ms. Hickman who extended the invitation, probably with General Randall’s influence as well. I would never presume to guess Prince Theodore’s feelings, but I have truly never seen Prince Theodore invite Ms. Hickman of his own accord. From beginning to end, Prince Theodore has only ever kept you by his side, truly.”
Without realizing it, Margaret had slowed her pace considerably. “So that’s how it is.”
“Yes. Every word I say is true. Ms. Campbell, you are kind–hearted and beautiful. If you truly become the Princess someday, I hope you will look after me. So I would never dare deceive you, Ms. Campbell,” Megan smiled brightly, walking beside Margaret, her face full of eager goodwill.
But Margaret found it hard to smile back.
What is she thinking? Why is she so certain that I can become the Princess?
There is still Myrna in between, isn’t there?
Then again–if her words are true, perhaps there really is nothing between Theodore and Myrna after all.
