Chapter 234 Just Head Straight Home
The thought eased her mood a little.
She had never cared for petty romantic rivalry.

If Theodore really had ambiguous ties with other women, even with the soft spot she held for him, she would choose to step back.
No matter how fond she was, she could never bring herself to share a husband with other women like the ladies of this world.
She’d agreed to give things a try only to get to know him better, and to see if he was the fickle type.
If he were, there would be no point in continuing at all.
Margaret wandered the mansion with Megan for ages, roaming nearly half the palace grounds before returning to the garden once more.
Sitting back down on the swing, Margaret looked melancholy.
She said, “It’s clear Prince Theodore most likely won’t be back for dinner. Why keep insisting I stay?”
Megan looked embarrassed. “I’m truly sorry, Ms. Campbell. It’s Prince Theodore’s order. As a servant, I have no choice but to obey and keep you here. You’re so kind and gentle–please don’t be annoyed with me.”
“I like how lively you are. I wouldn’t be annoyed,” Margaret said softly. “But it’ll be dark soon if I wait any longer.”
Megan said, “Prince Theodore said he’d be back shortly…”
“You’ve been saying that all afternoon. His ‘short while‘ is stretching far too long.” Margaret yawned tiredly, glancing at the sinking sunset. “The sun’s almost down. I really should head home.”
Megan frowned. “Ms. Campbell…”
“It’s alright, don’t try to keep me anymore. It wouldn’t look proper for a young lady to return home after dark anyway, and my family would surely ask questions. Thank you for keeping me company all afternoon. I’ll be back tomorrow. If Prince Theodore scolds you, I’ll speak up for you,” Margaret spoke gently, then finally rose to leave,
This time, Megan didn’t have the heart to stop her again, only hurrying along behind her.
She said, “Prince Theodore really does have urgent business. He promised he’d come back.”
Margaret smiled, “I know. I understand him, and I understand you, too. I’m not upset at all.”
She patted her shoulder, walking straight to the main gate of the Ducal Palace. “I’m heading back now. I’ll still come tomorrow. If Prince Theodore asks, just tell him I couldn’t wait any longer and left on my own.”
Without waiting for Megan’s reply, she stepped outside and boarded the carriage home, letting out a long breath of relief.

She couldn’t help chiding herself for foolishly waiting at the palace all afternoon, even though she’d already guessed he wouldn’t return.
Leaning back in the carriage to rest her eyes, she found the streets outside bustling with noise.
The curtain wasn’t drawn shut, so she opened her eyes to look out–the streets were far livelier than they had been at dawn.
“What’s special about today? Why are there still so many people out at dusk?” she asked.
“Ms. Campbell,” the coachman replied slowly, “there’s a Lantern Fair in town tonight. Every year at this time, common folk hold it spontaneously. The whole of Breston fills the streets, and even noble young lords and ladies come out to admire the lanterns. That’s why it’s so crowded.”
The carriage soon came to a halt. “The road ahead is jammed with traffic. Several carriages are stopped here while everyone buys lanterns up ahead. Would you like to get down and take a look, Ms. Campbell?”
Margaret shook her head. “I have no interest in such things. Just head straight home.”
“Very well,” the coachman said.
Yet the carriage stayed rooted in place.
The road grew more packed by the minute, crowds swarming outside the lantern shops, with long queues forming at some stalls.
Several other carriages were also stuck by the roadside.
A lady said, “Ugh, why did the Lantern Fair have to be today? I don’t even get to go out and enjoy it now.”
