“That’s true. But Lydia, you’re close friends with Ms. Hickman. Has she ever told you when she’ll marry Prince Theodore?”

Lydia Fultz leaned lazily against the carriage window and smiled, “She’d never speak of something like that to anyone. We’re good friends, but not that close. Besides, Prince Theodore hasn’t gone to see her in ages. I heard they had a falling–out once. Who knows if that quarrel hurt his feelings… That’s probably why he took up with another woman on purpose, just to get back at Myrna.”

As the two chatted, their carriage rumbled forward again, the road ahead finally clear.

Inside her own carriage, Margaret’s mood grew more and more restless.

At first, the two carriages traveled side by side, and she could hear every word of their conversation.

“I wonder what Ms. Hickman makes of this. How could someone as outstanding as Prince Theodore quarrel with her like that?”

“They’re childhood sweethearts–bickering is normal enough. It’s Margaret who’s truly to blame, sneaking in to take advantage of their rift.”

“That’s fair enough.”

Eager to reach their destination, the other carriage soon sped ahead.

Yet Margaret could no longer calm her heart.

A wave of quiet melancholy washed over her.

So his excuse about visiting his savior is just a pretense.

Megan has tried so hard to comfort me earlier.

Or perhaps Theodore is simply good at training his servants to smooth things over for him.

Both Megan and Cyan had gone out of their way to tell her how special she was to him.

Yet neither had mentioned that Myrna had once held that same special place in his heart.

Just as he’d taken her to sit beside him at this year’s palace banquet, he’d let Myrna sit right next to him the year before, too.

Margaret shook her head softly to chase away the thoughts.

The hall was packed that night, every table full, and all the private rooms already booked.

After waiting a while, she finally got an empty seat by the window.

“Ms. Campbell! What brings you here? I heard you ordered a pot of wine. Why the sudden urge to drink?” Lisa appeared beside her soon after.

“The whole town’s celebrating the Lantern Fair and drinking tonight,” Margaret said lightly. “I thought I’d join in for a few cups.”

Lisa said, “I see. We’re swamped tonight, so I can’t stay to chat. Make yourself comfortable and have something to eat–just don’t drink too much.”
