Chapter 271 Poisoned Words
A wave of seething jealousy washed over Christopher before he launched into another verbal assault. “You haven’t a clue how many people are laughing behind your back, do you? Every time the two of you go out together, holding hands–do you really think anyone admires you? Or worships you? Or sees you as some kind of perfect match?”
He gave a cold, mocking laugh. “The truth is, they’re all laughing at you. They laugh because you’re a nobody with no name or standing, yet you parade around as half of a pair. They laugh at the country bumpkin trying to play the part of a golden girl, thinking a little kindness means a lifetime commitment. In reality, you’re just a plaything. Once he’s bored, he’ll toss you aside‘
“Besides, Uncle Theodore has only ever had eyes for Myrna. Now, out of the blue, it’s you by his side. Who’s to say this isn’t just some couple’s spat? Once they patch things up, you’ll be thrown out on your ear. Don’t you feel cheap?
“With your reputation in tatters, who else would have you but me? Yes, I hurt you, but at least we were formally engaged. The whole world knew of our connection. And him? He’s dragged you through the mud without a second thought! After all the damage he’s done to your name, has he ever considered taking responsibility? I’m the one who’s always wanted to marry you. I’m the one who’s always intended to do right by you!”
Margaret tried several times to cut in, but Christopher always spoke first, his words dripping with a shameless certainty.
“And let’s not forget, we’ve held each other. You should have been mine long ago. How can you turn around and latch onto another man after that?”
Margaret was so furious she nearly laughed aloud. “So, in Prince Christopher’s world, a single embrace makes a woman yours? By that logic, you’ve clung to my sister more times than I can count. Why haven’t you brought her home as your wife yet?”
Christopher said in a grumpy tone, “I will marry her in due time. Right now, we’re talking about you.”
“There’s nothing to discuss. My affairs with Prince Theodore are none of your concern,” Margaret retorted.
Hearing her icy tone, Norma finally interjected, her voice sharp, “It seems you truly have no intention of showing me any respect.”
“I wouldn’t dare.”
Norma said, “If you wouldn’t dare, then gather your things. You will accompany me to the palace at once.”

Seeing Norma’s unwavering resolve, Margaret once again used Theodore as her shield. “It’s not that I refuse. But I have already promised Prince Theodore I would attend to his treatment daily.”
“As I understand it, you’ve been visiting the Ducal Palace day after day for quite some time. With the rumors swirling around Breston, your reputation has suffered greatly. Christopher’s words are not without merit,” Norma said coolly.
Her meaning was crystal clear: for a woman whose name was already ruined, Christopher’s willingness to marry her was an act of supreme generosity!
Norma looked down at Margaret with a gaze that seemed to say, “You should feel honored that I’ve come personally to invite you to serve as a companion to the princess!”
Margaret understood perfectly, but facing Norma directly, she couldn’t outright refuse. She clung stubbornly to her excuse. “Without Prince Theodore’s permission, I dare not agree, Your Majesty.”
“Hah! I will speak to Theodore myself. Are you using him to defy me?” Norma said.
“I wouldn’t dare.”
Norma pressed. “Then why do you keep refusing?”
Her voice grew colder. “Just yesterday, Theodore came to the palace himself. He looked perfectly healthy, brimming with energy, walking with a confident stride. Does that sound like an invalid to you? If you persist with this ‘treating his illness‘ excuse, are you not, in fact, cursing him to remain sick?”
“Your Majesty, I…”
“Enough! I won’t listen to any more of your excuses. You needn’t worry about Theodore. Start packing now. If you won’t, then come as you are. The palace will provide everything you need.” Norma’s eyes held a glacial intensity.

Since Margaret is now entangled with that wretched Theodore, bringing her into the palace is perfect. Let Theodore come to my place if he wishes to see her…
The thought of the expression on Theodore’s face was satisfaction enough.

Whether Margaret could heal him or not, once she was in the palace, she would be entirely at Norma’s mercy.
With that thought, Norma grew impatient to take Margaret away immediately.
Yet Margaret stood rooted to the spot, her expression growing more strained by the second.
Christopher couldn’t hold back. “Margaret, my mother is doing you a favor by inviting you to the palace. The least you could do is show some gratitude instead of standing there like a statue.”
Stella, who had remained silent until now, finally spoke up, her voice sweetly persuasive, “Margaret, please accept Queen Norma’s kindness. I’m sure she still holds you in some regard. What happened between you and Chris is such a pity. Since they’re willing to overlook… everything, wouldn’t it be for the best to make things right with him?”
