Chapter 272 Unmasked

A cold smirk curved Margaret’s lips. “Back in the day, you fought me tooth and nail for everything. terrified that Christopher would so much as glance my way. Now suddenly you’re eager to share? That doesn’t sound like you at all. Or is it because you look down on him now that he’s a cripple?”
Everyone in the room stiffened at her words.
Flustered, Stella blurted out, “How can you say such a thing? I never meant
“If not, then why say he doesn’t mind me, so I should accept him?” Margaret cut in, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “You’re the one who’s bald with no hair growing back, yet here you are, judging him?”
Stella fell silent, rendered speechless.
His tone icy, Christopher spoke up, “Didn’t you claim you shaved your own head and the hair would grow back?”
Stella’s fists clenched in rage.
I never should have spoken up!
Why does the conversation swing back to me? Damn Margaret! And damn Christopher!
Who is he, a man who can never walk again, to look down on me for being permanently bald?
Swallowing her fury, she forced a calm reply. “Chris, don’t listen to her nonsense. She’s just trying to change the subject…”
She quickly steered the conversation back. “Everyone knows how skilled she is in medicine. Prince Theodore summons her to the Ducal Palace daily. We all know he would never be interested in her personally, so why is he so attentive? It must be because her medical skills are remarkable. If she would only agree to help, you could walk again, Chris…”
Having redirected the focus to Margaret, Stella turned to her sister. “You have the ability to heal him. Why won’t you do it?”
Christopher’s patience seemed to wear thin. “Margaret, don’t force Mother to have you dragged to the palace. It would be far better for you to graciously accept.”
Taking a deep breath, Margaret responded, “Since it’s clear I have no wish to enter the palace, why must Queen Norma insist?”
Norma’s eyes narrowed dangerously. “I am kindly offering you the position of companion to the Princess, and you dare accuse me of coercion? How bold! Such disrespect cannot be tolerated. Someone, slap her!”
At her command, an elderly maid stepped forward, but Christopher quickly intervened.
“Wait! Mother, she didn’t mean to disrespect you. Let me talk to her.”
He turned to Margaret, his voice laced with urgency. “Why must you be so difficult? If not for yourself, then do this for me. Isn’t this the perfect solution? Serving as Noelle’s companion won’t harm your

reputation, and it gives you the chance to treat my legs. It’s a win for both of us.”
“I’ve told you already, Tesn’t help you, Margaret stated coldly.

Christopher snapped, his anger boiling over, “Can’t help? This is nothing but your petty revenge! Margaret. enough of this childish tantrum. My legs are not a bargaining chip! I’ve become the laughingstock of the entire kingdom–stripped of my title as Crown Prince, all because I’m a cripple! If you wanted to punish me, consider it done!”
He looked at her with pained eyes. “And whose fault is it that I ended up like this? Uncle Theodore attacked me to defend your honor! If he hadn’t beaten me that day, would my legs have failed me?
“I kept our… incident quiet to protect your reputation. Do you think Father would have let Theodore’s actions slide if I’d made them public? I was thinking of you! Can’t you see that?”
His words hung heavily in the air, dense with unspoken implications.
Margaret stared at him, momentarily stunned, while Stella grew visibly agitated.
“Chris, what happened between you two? What do you mean, protecting her reputation…?” Stella pressed.
Margaret, however, was reeling from the revelation about Theodore.
He had done so much for her, and she’d known nothing of it until now…
Ignoring Stella, Christopher kept his gaze fixed on Margaret. “I kept silent to spare your dignity. But if you refuse to show any compassion, then I’ll have to resort to less graceful methods to keep you by my side. You know how I feel about you. I won’t let you walk away.”
Before Margaret could retort, he pressed on. “I know you no longer care about your own reputation–if you did, you wouldn’t visit the Ducal Palace so openly. But even if you don’t care about yourself, think of Uncle Theodore.
“If Father learns that Theodore assaulted me and left me disabled, do you think he’d escape punishment? I have nothing left to lose–my Crown Prince title is already gone. Even if Father discovers I… acted out of line with you, I’ve already paid the price. But Theodore taking the law into his own hands and crippling me… that’s another matter entirely.”
