Chapter 282 Doubts

Just as Keith was planning to slip unnoticed into the Prime Minister’s Estate to see her, he unexpectedly discovered an increased presence of shadow guards all around.
It seemed Theodore had already sought her out.
The thought of the two of them alone together in a room for so long left Keith with an unsettling feeling in his chest.
But he couldn’t explain why.
Finally turning to face Margaret, he asked, “You accepted Prince Theodore’s marriage proposal. Is it because you like him?”
Margaret smiled slightly, “Why do you ask?”
“You’ve saved my life twice. To me, you’re my savior, so your affairs matter to me as much as my own,” Keith replied earnestly.
He continued, his tone serious, “I know Prince Theodore’s status is extraordinary. Even if you’re not an ordinary person, refusing him wouldn’t be easy. I want to know: Did you accept him because you truly like him, or because you felt you couldn’t refuse?”
Margaret looked puzzled, struggling to grasp why he was bringing this up.
“My point is, if you don’t like him, I can help you.” Keith pressed on.
Hearing his solemn tone, Margaret let out a soft laugh. “It’s not as serious as you think. I accepted his proposal because I do like him. If I were the type to yield to status, I would have accepted Christopher long ago.”
“Is that so…” Keith’s spirits sank even lower for some reason.
He murmured, almost to himself, “So the previous plan is off.”
Margaret nodded. “I was just about to talk to you about that. The plan we discussed last time- let’s put the idea of going along with it on hold for now. We’ll find the right opportunity to expose Stella. At this stage, she’s no longer a threat to me anyway. She’s already ruined her own reputation. We’ll just wait for her to make a move or find a moment to make her wish she’d never been born.”
“Are you sure about this? It’s a decision for a lifetime,” Keith couldn’t help asking again.
Honestly, he didn’t even understand why he was pressing the matter so much.

Margaret stared at him blankly. “Are you referring to… my accepting Prince Theodore?”
“Yes.”
“I can tell his feelings for me are genuine. And mine for him are real too. Though we haven’t known each other very long, and maybe it’s not love yet, I like him enough that I’d regret it forever if I didn’t at least try. So, I feel ready,” she said, a gentle smile spreading across her face.
Beaming, she added, “Freedom is incredibly alluring, but marrying someone you like doesn’t necessarily mean losing it. Maybe in the future, he’ll even be willing to leave Breston with me, to explore the world together. Having a partner might bring its own kind of adventure.”
As she spoke, she reached for his wrist to check his pulse. “Is there something bothering you today? Is that why you came?”
Keith pulled his hand back abruptly.
“No.”
Sensing his odd mood, Margaret felt confused. “What’s wrong?”
“It’s nothing. I just heard you accepted Prince Theodore’s proposal and wanted to know if our plan was still on. Now that I have my answer, we’ll proceed differently,” he said, his voice flat.
With his mask on, Margaret couldn’t read his expression. She simply nodded. “Yes, let’s change the plan. If Stella really intends to go through with her scheme, we’ll find a way to expose her.”
“I heard Prince Theodore originally had someone else in his heart…” Keith remarked suddenly.
Margaret paused. “Why bring that up?”
“You saved my life. I don’t want to see you get hurt, so I want you to think it through carefully…”
Margaret said calmly, “I’ve heard about that. I plan to talk to him about it properly when I get the chance. He says the person he likes is me, and I like him a great deal, so I’m willing to trust him. Maybe the truth isn’t what the rumors say. Thank you for your concern, but I know what I’m doing.”
After delivering this composed reply, she turned to leave.
But Keith spoke again, his voice low, “On my way here, I saw Ms. Hickman going to the Ducal Palace again… and no one stopped her.”
His implication was clear: Myrna’s free access to the Ducal Palace made it hard not to suspect her relationship with Theodore.
After all, unless the connection was intimate, the palace staff wouldn’t treat her so kindly.

Seeing Margaret’s expression shift slightly, Keith added, “My point is, if this matters to you, you should get an answer from Prince Theodore soon. After all… you still have time to reconsider your decision.”
“Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing,” Margaret said, trying to sound unaffected, though a pang of jealousy had already begun to gnaw at her.
Then Keith spoke again, his gaze fixed, “You two…”
Margaret didn’t understand until she followed his eyes and realized he was staring squarely at her chest.
