Chapter 5 I Will See Her

“It’s the second young lady of the Prime Minister and the Crown Prince,” Cyan began carefully. “The story goes back three years.”
He paused, and when Theodore didn’t interrupt, he continued. “That year, the Crown Prince injured his leg. The third lady, who was to be betrothed to him, vanished without a trace. To uphold their promise, the Prime Minister offered the second young lady instead–also a legitimate daughter. After the engagement. that young lady accompanied the Crown Prince through his darkest days, until…
“Until the Crown Prince’s legs healed, and that missing lady, Stella, reappeared.”
Theodore let out a cold snort. “Vain and despicable.”
“Indeed. Many whispered the same. But she claimed those two or three years away were spent seeking a physician for the Crown Prince. She said she’d become a disciple of a legendary healer and returned with some medical knowledge. The Crown Prince was deeply moved, and most people deemed her circumstances excusable…”
“Foolish.”
Cyan flinched at the venom in his master’s voice. Dropped his head lower. “The Crown Prince not only believed her–he blamed Margaret for ‘losing‘ her in the first place. Since Stella’s return, he’s done nothing but berate Margaret. And now… he plans to marry them on the same day. Through the same gate.”
Cyan’s voice faded to a whisper. His heart hammered.
He had no idea why Theodore was so interested in Margaret’s affairs. The thought that she had cured the Prince’s blood parasites was utterly unbelievable to him!
But he dared not question it.
The first war god of Northpoint, the youngest imperial brother of the reigning emperor–even matters of the Crown Prince’s Estate were subject to his word, let alone the Prime Minister’s Estate.
How could he dare to pry?
He kept his head low.
After a long silence, Theodore finally spoke, his tone flat. “Before even taking a wife, he’s already thinking of favoring a concubine over the principal one. It seems the Crown Prince is unworthy of his position.”
Cyan immediately echoed the sentiment.
“Yes. Margaret was deeply devoted. Being treated so shabbily is truly a pity…”
More of a shame she was already engaged. And plain–looking. Plump, even.
Otherwise, he might have allowed himself to hope….
After all, in all these years, this was the first time he’d seen Theodore show such interest in any woman.

As he mused, Theodore rose to his feet.
“Tomorrow. The Fragrant Celestial Pavilion. I want to see her.”
“Yes, Your Highness.”

The next morning. Margaret woke to voices.
“Falling from such a height and walking away unscathed–it’s truly unbelievable.”
“The snow’s been heavy lately. Maybe the drifts were thick enough to cushion her fall…”
“What does snow have to do with it? Maybe fat people just bounce better?”
A few maidservants were snickering just outside. Awake now, Margaret heard every word clearly.
But she didn’t get angry. Instead, she rose calmly, washed, and sat before the bronze mirror by the window, quietly studying her reflection.
Nice bone structure. Fair skin. Long hair.
Even chubby, she was pretty. If she could lose twenty or thirty pounds, with these bone structures, she’d be absolutely stunning.
She took her pulse again. The poison was gone. She’d stop gaining weight now. With a healthy diet, she’d likely slim down to normal within two months.
“Miss, are you awake?”
Winter’s voice came from outside the door.
“Come in.”
Margaret spoke softly, but her gaze remained fixed on her reflection.
She remembered that even before she’d fully matured, her features were already quite beautiful. No wonder Stella had targeted her appearance…
Arriving in this world and receiving such a generous gift right away–she’d have to find the right time to return the favor properly.
“Miss, are you feeling better today?” Winter’s voice held a hint of timidity. “Mr. Campbell wants to see you in his study as soon as you’re awake…”
“I’m not going.”
Margaret’s tone was calm. “And those ones outside–send them away. From now on, I only need you to serve me here”
Winter blinked in surprise. Before she could respond, a cold voice came from the doorway.

“You’ve gotten even more unreasonable. Sleeping till noon, then throwing out the servants the moment you wake. They’ve served you faithfully–what’s your problem now?”
Margaret’s lashes fluttered. She turned to see an elegant young man standing at the threshold. “You committed a grave error yesterday, refused your punishment, and now you refuse to see me. Do you still acknowledge me as your elder brother?”
He was undeniably handsome, but Margaret glanced at him only briefly before looking away.
“No.”
Jasper’s expression stiffened. He hadn’t expected such a response. “You-”
“You’ve never acknowledged me as your sister. Why should I acknowledge you as my brother?”
Margaret’s tone was blunt.
Jasper’s eyes flickered with surprise. Something about her felt different today.
Frowning, he said, “I heard you struck Genna yesterday?”
“Yes.”
