His words left Jasper gasping with rage. “You are simply too unreasonable!”

He looked at Margaret with an expression of utter frustration, as if watching a promising student fail.
“The Crown Prince dotes on you. The moment he heard you were threatening to jump off a cliff, he immediately brought men to rescue you. Even though you didn’t actually jump, he still carried you back himself. He has consistently reserved the position of Crown Princess for you. Yet you are so ungrateful- with a single sentence, you erase all the kindness he has ever shown you!
“And Stella! She suffered out there, alone, and finally made it home. But all you do is compete with her. When has she ever targeted you? She knows you love pastries–she has them made for you every single day. She worried you didn’t have enough servants in your courtyard, so she-”
“Enough of this nonsense!”
Margaret cut him off impatiently, “Not leaving? Insisting on lecturing me? Fine. Then let’s lay everything out clearly, once and for all!”
She fixed him with an icy glare. “You keep insisting he’s always cared for me. Then why must he marry Stella? Don’t you see the contradiction? Let me tell you the truth!“.
“The truth is, the Crown Prince has never, ever cared for me! The only reason he was afraid I might jump is that he feared Stella would be distressed. He came to rescue me for her sake! Otherwise, why would he lie to you all about me actually falling?”
Jasper opened his mouth to retort, but Margaret simply rolled up her sleeves. The moment she did, a shocking array of bruises and wounds came into view, rendering him speechless.
“If propriety didn’t forbid it, I’d show you the rest of my injuries!” she continued. “Of course, I know you won’t believe me no matter what I say. But you’re not stupid. Everyone in this household knows the truth. If you just asked, just once–if you were willing to believe me, just this once!” Seeing Jasper’s stunned, disbelieving expression, Margaret pressed on. “And those maidservants in my courtyard. I know you’ve seen me reprimand them a few times. But you’ve only seen me scold them. Have you ever heard how they mock and ridicule me behind my back? Because they were sent by Stella. They’re certain I wouldn’t dare kill them!”
“In the past, I was a fool. Even when wronged, I never fought back. But now I finally understand; taking a step back doesn’t bring peace. It only emboldens those who harm me to take another step forward!”
Jasper frowned deeply. “To slander Stella, you would injure yourself to this extent…”
Margaret laughed coldly.
She’d known he wouldn’t believe her. All this talking, wasted on deaf ears. Pathetic.
Living in a family like this—no wonder the original Margaret had wanted to jump.
Suffocating…
Jasper’s voice softened–finally. “I know you’re saying all this because you want me to care. But Father’s

“Enough.”

Margaret’s voice dripped with disgust. “The only reason you’re so harsh with me is that you think I’m competing with Stella for the Crown Prince, isn’t it? Yesterday, I signed a dissolution agreement with him. Next month, she will be the only one marrying him. From now on, don’t say I stole her position. I’m stepping out of their story.”
She went back inside, retrieved the document, and thrust it into Jasper’s hands.
One glance, and his eyes widened.
It was indeed the Crown Prince’s handwriting…
“The engagement… It’s truly dissolved?” Jasper stared at her in disbelief.
“Are you satisfied now, Jasper? If so, please leave.”
“Impossible. He was your obsession. How could you let go?”
“Let go or not, it’s done. Calling it an obsession is overstating it. I may have foolishly liked him once, but now I see clearly that he has no feelings for me. Since everyone keeps telling me they’re the ones truly in love, why should I force myself between them, only to be humiliated again and again?”
Jasper grabbed her wrist, agitated. “Do you realize this agreement is legally binding? Don’t be reckless! How many people know about this?”
Margaret shook off his hand. “Why would I sign it if it wasn’t binding?”
“A woman who’s been cast aside becomes a laughingstock! And to be rejected by the Crown Prince—no man will ever dare marry you!”
Margaret smirked, “No one daring to marry me just means I get to enjoy my freedom. Besides, isn’t this what you all wanted? I step aside, and now you’re not happy?”
Jasper clenched his fists. “I’m your brother! How can I stand by and watch you become a joke?”
“I’m already the biggest joke in the capital!”
Margaret’s gaze was ice–cold. “And the ones who made me this joke aren’t just those two–you’re their accomplice!”
With that, she swept past him toward the door.
“Since you won’t leave, I will!”
She couldn’t stand another moment of this pointless argument.
Better to breathe some fresh air than to stew in this toxic atmosphere.
But after she’d gone, Jasper stood frozen in place, staring at the dissolution agreement in his hands, her words echoing relentlessly in his mind.

If everything she’d done before was to marry the Crown Prince….
If her constant conflict with Stella was simply jealousy over him…
Then why would she voluntarily dissolve the engagement? What purpose did that serve?
Could it be… what she said was true?
Jasper startled himself with the thought and immediately shook his head. Impossible.
The Crown Prince had chosen her as his princess. His affection couldn’t be fake.
And Stella was innocent and kind. She couldn’t possibly be as Margaret described…
Everyone had been good to Margaret. She simply didn’t appreciate it.
She was already lucky enough…
