CHAPTER 101 PART 1
Grayson City General Hospital – 12:47 AM
Marcus Steel walked through the sterile white corridors of Grayson City General with measured steps, his dragon senses mapping every heartbeat, every security camera, every potential threat within a hundred-yard radius. The hospital’s fluorescent lights cast harsh shadows that matched his darkening mood.
Aaron Jackson lay in a private room on the fourth floor, surrounded by enough medical equipment to rival an ICU. Monitors beeped rhythmically, tracking vitals that were stable but concerning. IV lines ran from both arms, pumping fluids and antibiotics to fight off potential infections from his numerous wounds.
The legendary crime boss-the man who controlled half of Grayson City’s underworld with an iron fist-looked almost fragile wrapped in bandages that covered his torso, arms, and half his face. But his eyes, when they opened at Marcus’s approach, blazed with the same defiant fury that had built his empire.
“Elder brother,” Aaron’s voice was hoarse but steady. “You look like hell.”
“You look worse,” Marcus replied, settling into the chair beside the hospital bed. His dragon aura, carefully suppressed in public spaces, flickered with barely controlled rage that made the nearby monitors glitch briefly.
Aaron noticed. He always noticed. “Don’t. Don’t do that thing where your power starts leaking out and hospital equipment starts malfunctioning. The nurses already think there’s something wrong with the electrical system.”
“There’s something wrong with the people who put you here,” Marcus corrected coldly,
Before Aaron could respond, the door opened to admit Truman Ridge-the elderly representative from the Ridge Family who’d appeared at the Leopold River Highway ambush. He bowed respectfully to Marcus, though his expression carried concern.
“Young Master,” Truman said quietly, “the Ridge Family has prepared a private medical facility. Elite physicians trained in both modern medicine and ancient healing arts. We can transfer Aaron there within the hour-his recovery would be accelerated significantly.”
Marcus’s dragon eyes assessed the offer with cold calculation. The Ridge Family’s medical resources were legendary centuries of accumulated knowledge, techniques that blended cultivation healing with cutting-edge technology. Aaron would recover faster there. Safer there.
But it would also create a direct, documented connection between Aaron Jackson and the Ridge Family. And from there, it was only a matter of time before someone-some enemy with resources and patience-traced that connection back to Marcus himself.
His true identity. His real power. The dragon bloodline he’d kept hidden for three years while his memories remained fractured and incomplete.
“No,” Marcus said flatly. “Aaron stays here.”
Truman’s eyes widened slightly. “Young Master, with respect-his injuries are severe. Standard hospital care, while adequate, cannot compare to what we could provide. The Ridge Family-”
“Cannot be visibly connected to Aaron Jackson,” Marcus interrupted, his voice carrying that ancient authority that made even elderly clan representatives fall silent. “Not yet. Not while the person who orchestrated my memory loss remains hidden in the shadows.”
The words hung heavy in the air. Truman bowed deeply, understanding the unspoken implications. Three years ago, something or someone had damaged Marcus’s dragon memories so thoroughly that even his ancient

power couldn’t fully restore them. That enemy remained unknown, still lurking, still dangerous.
Revealing too much of Marcus’s network, too many of his hidden connections, would paint targets on everyone he valued.
“As you wish, Young Master,” Truman said quietly. “The Ridge Family will maintain discreet surveillance to ensure his safety here.”
After Truman departed, Aaron studied Marcus with sharp eyes despite his injuries. “You’re protecting me by keeping distance. Smart. Frustrating, but smart.”
“You’re no good to me dead,” Marcus said. “Or permanently crippled because you rushed back into action too soon.”
Aaron’s jaw clenched. “The Brand family did this. Cameron Brand specifically. Elder brother, when I get out of here -when I’m healed-I’m going to personally erase every single one of them from existence. The father, Damien. The remaining cousins. Every associate, every business holding, every trace of their bloodline. I’ll burn it all.”
“No,” Marcus said firmly. “You won’t.”
“Elder brother-”
“The Brand family is one of Grayson City’s established powers,” Marcus interrupted, his tone brooking no argument. “Wiping them out completely would violate unwritten rules between the major families. It would invite retaliation not just from their allies, but from every other power who’d see us as a destabilizing threat.”
“They tried to KILL me!” Aaron’s voice rose, making monitors beep faster. “They targeted you! They threatened Quinn-a Sacred Saintess! And you want me to just let that slide?!”
“I want you to focus on recovery,” Marcus said, his dragon aura pulsing with protective warmth that made Aaron’s pain visibly lessen. “I’ll handle the Brand family. When the time comes. In a way that doesn’t destroy everything we’ve built.”
Aaron wanted to argue-Marcus could see it in his eyes-but years of brotherhood had taught Aaron when elder brother’s decisions were final.
“Fine,” Aaron muttered. “But I get to watch when you do it.”
“Deal.”
Marcus stood, preparing to leave, but paused at the door. Something had been gnawing at him for days—a detail that didn’t fit the pattern of random escalation.
“Aaron, the video. The one showing Quamaine Potter being beaten at Ocean Park, Who filmed it? How did it spread so widely?”
Aaron frowned, his tactical mind engaging despite his injuries. “I assumed tourists or bystanders. It went viral fast -multiple uploads from different accounts within hours.”
“Too fast,” Marcus said quietly, “Too coordinated. Someone wanted that video public. Someone wanted the Potter family humiliated specifically.”
“You think it was deliberate manipulation?”
“I know it was,” Marcus confirmed. “That video set off the chain reaction-Potter family’s revenge, economic war on Hartford Group, all the attacks that followed. Someone orchestrated this from the shadows.”
