Rather than return to their mansion immediately, Marcus and Quinn ate dinner at a small restaurant far from family drama and corporate warfare. They walked afterward through quiet streets, hands intertwined, Quinn’s Saintess aura glowing softly in the evening darkness.
“Stay home from the office for a while,” Marcus said. “Work remotely. It’s not safe with everything happening.”
Quinn nodded, her cold indifference firmly back in place but her grip on his hand betraying underlying fear. “Only if you promise to stay safe too.”
“I always do.”
“You fight assassins and crime bosses,” Quinn pointed out. “That’s not exactly safe.”
Marcus smiled despite himself. “I long for a peaceful life with you. No conflicts, no enemies, no drama. Just us. But they keep dragging me back into chaos.” 1
“Then we’ll survive the chaos together,” Quinn said quietly. “And when it’s over”
“We’ll live quietly,” Marcus promised. “I swear it.”
They turned a corner toward the parking garage where Marcus’s BMW waited—
And found Federico Yarrow blocking their path, flanked by eight young men with dyed hair, tattoos, and wooden sticks.
The gang looked like a recruitment poster for juvenile delinquency-cheap leather jackets, aggressive postures, the kind of false bravado that came from years intimidating people too civilized to fight back.
“THERE HE IS!” Federico shouted, pointing at Marcus with vindictive glee. His earlier terror had been replaced by borrowed courage from having backup. “That’s the bastard who pulled a knife on me! Beat his ass! I’ll take full responsibility!”
The gang leader-a tall punk with green-dyed hair and facial piercings cracked his knuckles. “You threatened our brother Federico? Big mistake, old man. We’re the Westside Warriors. We don’t let disrespect slide.”
“Yeah!” Another gang member swung his wooden stick experimentally. “We’re gonna teach you what loyalty means! What brotherhood means!”
Federico stepped forward, his earlier humiliation transformed into vindictive rage now that he had numbers on his side. “You slapped me earlier, Quinn. Twice. That’s disrespectful to family. So here’s the deal-you let me slap you back, just once, and we’ll call it even. Fair, right? I’m being generous here.”
Quinn’s Saintess aura flared with fury, but Marcus squeezed her hand gently. “We’re leaving. Let’s just—”
“Leaving?!” Federico laughed, interpreting their attempt to walk away as cowardice. “You think you can just walk away?! You pulled a KNIFE on me! You threatened me! And now you’re gonna pay!”
He grabbed a wooden stick from one of his gang members, his face twisted with rage and false courage.
“I’m gonna beat you so bad,” Federico snarled, “that you’ll never look at my family wrong again! You’ll never disrespect me again!”
Quinn pulled at Marcus’s arm urgently. “Marcus, let’s just go. They’re not worth-”

“Not worth it?” Federico’s voice rose to a shout. “You hear that, boys?! They think we’re not worth it! They think they’re better than us!”
The gang erupted in agreement, their voices overlapping in aggressive chorus.
