CHAPTER 106 PART 1

Zedekiah Wharf – 11:47 PM

Marcus Steel stood at the edge of the unfinished dock, hands in his pockets, staring out at the black expanse of ocean that stretched beyond Grayson City’s industrial coastline. The wharf was a skeleton of its future self-half- completed structures, piles of construction materials, cranes frozen mid-gesture against the night sky. During daylight hours, the place buzzed with workers and heavy machinery. After dark, it became a ghost town.

Perfect for what was coming.

The wind carried salt and industrial chemicals, mixing with the distant smell of fish and diesel. Waves lapped against concrete pylons with rhythmic inevitability, the only sound besides Marcus’s steady breathing,

His dragon aura rippled subtly in the darkness, invisible to normal eyes but creating pressure that made the air itself feel heavy. He’d deliberately chosen this isolated location-acting within the city would draw attention, create complications, potentially endanger Quinn. Out here, surrounded by unfinished construction and empty water, he could handle threats without collateral damage.

Once, Marcus reflected bitterly, I was the Dragon King. Young Master of the Ten Thousand Mountain Alliance. Forces across continents knew my name and trembled. Now I stand alone at a dock, hunted by assassins for bounty money, with fragmented memories and limited strength.

Three years of hiding. Three years of pretending to be powerless while his dragon memories slowly, painfully reconstructed themselves. Three years without reliable subordinates at his side because revealing too much would paint targets on everyone he valued.

But Cosmo’s arrival changed the equation. His youngest disciple, returned after three years of searching for him, unknowingly drawn to Grayson City by a bounty on his current identity. When she discovered the truth-when she recognized her master beneath Marcus Steel’s civilian façade these troubles would lessen considerably.

If she doesn’t try to kill me first, Marcus thought with dark amusement.

Movement in the nearby woods caught his dragon senses a heartbeat, controlled breathing, the subtle displacement of air that marked a predator moving through darkness.

“You can come out now,” Marcus called without turning around. “I’ve known you were there for the past three minutes.”

Silence stretched for five heartbeats. Then a figure emerged from the tree line-dressed in white clothing that seemed to glow faintly in the darkness, a curved sword strapped across his back, movements carrying the fluid precision of someone trained in deadly arts.

“Marcus Steel,” the figure said, his accent marking him as Japanese despite his American name. “My name is Fujita Tooi. Perhaps you’ve heard of me?”

Marcus turned slowly, his dragon eyes assessing the assassin with perfect clarity despite the darkness. “Shadow Warrior. Specialized in the Three-Blade Slash technique. Forty-three confirmed kills, mostly politicians and corporate executives. Known for arrogance that matches your skill.”

Fujita’s expression showed surprise followed by satisfaction. “So you’ve done your research. Good. That means you understand the futility of resistance. Surrender now, and I’ll make your death quick,”

“You came alone,” Marcus observed. “Overconfidence or stupidity?”

“Neither,” Fujita replied, his hand moving to rest on his sword’s hilt. “I came alone because I don’t need backup

to eliminate one civilian. The Five Tigers are watching from the perimeter-insurance in case complications arise. The Queen herself has arrived in Grayson City, drawn by the doubled bounty and the spectacle of so many legendary assassins converging on one target.

“The Queen,” Marcus repeated quietly. Cosmo’s underworld title. “She’s that close?”

“Close enough that I need to kill you quickly before she arrives,” Fujita said. “A hundred million dollars is mine to claim. Your head will cement my legend as the assassin who eliminated Marcus Steel while the Queen and the Five Tigers watched from the shadows.”

Marcus’s smile was cold and utterly without humor. “Then stop talking and attack. Or are you one of those assassins who dies mid-monologue?”

Fujita’s eyes narrowed. “Brave words from a dead man. I don’t even need my sword for trash like you.”
