Quinn Hartford’s Saintess aura flared with protective urgency as Banyan Carmichael’s massive hand arced toward Lance Casey’s face. Her best friend-her closest confidante since college-about to be struck by an underworld thug because of reckless words spoken in anger.

No, Quinn thought desperately. I won’t let-

But Marcus had already moved..

His hand shot up with dragon-enhanced speed that made the motion blur, intercepting Banyan’s strike mid- swing. The impact created a sound like meat hitting concrete-except the meat was Banyan’s fist and the concrete was Marcus Steel’s palm infused with ancient power.

Banyan’s entire arm went numb. The shock traveled from his knuckles to his shoulder, as if he’d punched solid steel wrapped in electricity. His eyes widened with genuine confusion-he’d hit hundreds of people in his career, broken bones with these fists, but he’d never felt anything like this.

“What the “Banyan jerked his hand back, shaking it uselessly. “What did you do?!”

“Blocked you,” Marcus said calmly, his dragon eyes carrying mild amusement. “Seemed appropriate.”

Rage replaced confusion in Banyan’s expression. Nobody-NOBODY-humiliated Crossing the River Dragon in his own territory. “You think you’re tough? You think blocking one punch makes you special?!”

He turned to his fifteen gang members, who’d been watching with growing tension. “What are you idiots standing around for?! BEAT HIM! Break his legs! Break his FACE! Show this punk what happens when you disrespect Banyan Carmichael!”

The thugs erupted into motion, surrounding Marcus’s table with practiced aggression. Their voices overlapped in threatening chorus:

“You’re dead!”

“Nobody touches our boss!”

“We’ll teach you respect!”

Lance grabbed her phone again. “I’m calling the police! Everyone stay calm!”

“Good luck with that,” Larkin sneered, positioning himself near the exit with three of his own men. “Cops won’t arrive for twenty minutes. Plenty of time for you to learn why crossing Banyan is a death sentence.”

The restaurant staff cowered behind the counter. Other diners pressed themselves against walls, trying to become invisible. Everyone who lived in Grayson City knew Banyan Carmichael’s reputation-crossing him meant disappearing into the river with concrete shoes.

Marcus stood slowly, his dragon aura radiating controlled power that made the air itself feel heavy. He gently pulled Lance to his side-protective despite her earlier ridiculous claim-and looked at Cosmo with calm certainty.

“Don’t kill anyone,” Marcus said simply.

That single instruction carried absolute confidence. Not “be careful.” Not “can you handle this?” Just a reminder

not to commit murder.

The gang laughed-harsh, mocking sounds.

“That’s your backup?!” One thug gestured at Cosmo with contemptuous dismissal. “A pretty girl in a dress? Boss, this is gonna be easy!”

“She’ll probably scream and cry,” another added. “Maybe we keep her after we’re done with him.”

Cosmo’s smile was cold and utterly without humor.

Then she moved.

Dragon King-taught speed turned her into a blur of lethal precision. Her first kick caught the closest thug in the solar plexus with force that lifted him completely off his feet and sent him flying backward through the air. He crashed through two tables before slamming into the far wall, unconscious before he landed.

The second thug managed to raise his hands defensively. Cosmo grabbed a glass bottle from a nearby table and smashed it across his skull with calculated force-not enough to kill, but more than enough to drop him like a puppet with cut strings.

“What the–“A third attacker charged with a chair raised as a weapon.

Cosmo ducked under his swing, swept his legs with dragon-enhanced strength that shattered his kneecaps, and used his own momentum to drive his face into the floor. Blood sprayed from his broken nose.
