Riverside Café – Cashier Counter 6:23 PM

Lance Casey walked toward the cashier with Marcus Steel’s black card clutched between her fingers like evidence in a criminal trial. In her mind, the math was simple and damning: Marcus was a “pretty boy”-handsome, confident, capable in a fight. Precisely because he possessed all those qualities, he had to be broke.

Perfect men don’t exist, Lance thought with smug certainty. There’s always a fatal flaw. With Marcus, it’s money. Or rather, the complete lack of it.

Quinn Hartford was just an ordinary salaried worker in Lance’s understanding-chairman title aside, how much could she really be making? Fifty thousand a year? Maybe seventy? And Marcus, who openly admitted to being unemployed, living off his wife? That combination screamed financial disaster.

The card would decline. Lance was absolutely certain. And when it did, she’d march back to that table and expose him for the fraudulent pretty boy he was.

The cashier-a middle-aged woman who’d witnessed the entire gang beatdown with terrified fascination—took the card with trembling hands. “Your total is seventeen thousand, two hundred and forty-three dollars.”

“Seventeen thousand?!” Lance’s voice climbed. “For FOOD?!”

“You ordered one of everything,” the cashier reminded her gently. “Including the chef’s special premium selections.”

Lance’s smug satisfaction returned. Seventeen thousand. Marcus Steel, the unemployed freeloader, definitely didn’t have seventeen thousand lying around. This would be beautiful.

The cashier swiped the card.

Approved.

The single word on the screen hit Lance like a physical blow. Her smugness evaporated instantly, replaced by confusion. “Wait. Check again. That can’t be right.”

“The transaction went through, ma’am,” the cashier said, printing the receipt. “Would you like-”

Lance snatched the paper before the woman could finish, her eyes scanning for the card balance out of pure reflex.

Then she stopped breathing.

The number didn’t make sense. Couldn’t make sense. She counted the zeros once. Twice. Three times. Her hands began trembling so violently the receipt rustled audibly.

That’s-that’s not possible. No one has that much money on a single card. The machine must be broken. This has to be an error.

“Ma’am?” The cashier’s voice carried concern. “Are you alright?”

“Is this-is this number correct?” Lance’s voice came out as a whisper.

“Yes, ma’am. That’s the available balance. Is there a problem?”

Lance’s legs went weak. She stumbled backward, the receipt still clutched in her shaking hand, her entire worldview crumbling like sand castles in a tsunami.

Anna Harris watched Lance return from the cashier counter with growing concern. Her friend’s face had gone pale, her steps unsteady, her expression carrying shock so profound it looked like she’d witnessed death.

“Lance?” Anna called out. “Did the card get declined? Don’t worry, I can—”

Lance didn’t respond. She walked past the table like a zombie, her eyes unfocused, the receipt dangling from nerveless fingers.

“Lance!” Anna grabbed her friend’s arm, giving her a gentle shake.

The touch was enough. Lance’s legs gave out completely, and she collapsed to the floor in a graceless heap, still clutching the receipt like it was radioactive.

“LANCE!” Quinn’s Saintess aura exploded with concern, golden light erupting as she rushed to her friend’s side. ” What happened?! Are you hurt?!”

Lance’s hand slowly extended, offering the black card back to Marcus with the reverence one might show a holy relic. “Here. Your… your card.”

Marcus took it calmly. “Was there a problem?”
