Chapter 14 PART 1
Marcus reached into his jacket and withdrew a card.
The obsidian black surface seemed to absorb light rather than reflect it, completely matte except for subtle silver engravings that caught the eye with hypnotic patterns. No logo. No company name. Just those shifting, intricate designs.
The laughter exploded instantly.
“That’s it?” Robert Chen wheezed. “That’s his big reveal? A bank card?”
“Oh my God, he actually thought-” Jessica couldn’t finish, doubled over with laughter.
“It’s just a regular debit card!” someone else shouted. “Probably has like fifty bucks on it!”
Oliver’s bruised face split into a triumphant grin. “This is perfect. Absolutely perfect. Marcus Steel, ladies and gentlemen-the man who tried to save his wife’s reputation with a grocery store bank card!”
Marcus handed the card to Madison calmly. She took it, examined it briefly, then swiped it through her
terminal.
Her expression didn’t change. Professional. Neutral.
“It’s a bank card,” she confirmed.
The lobby erupted.
“I KNEW IT!” Wesley Hartford roared. “I KNEW this fraud was going to pull something like this! Quinn, this is what you married! This is the man you chose over every eligible bachelor in the city!”
“This is unacceptable!” Robert Chen turned to the other employees. “We need to report this to Zachary Hartford immediately! Quinn brought her useless husband to a company event, let him humiliate us all with his pathetic lies-”
“She’s destroyed her credibility completely,” Jessica agreed, her phone still recording. “The Saintess who can’t even control her own husband. This is career suicide.”
Oliver limped closer to Quinn, his voice dripping with false sympathy. “Oh, cousin. This is tragic. Truly tragic. When Grandfather Zachary hears about this-and he will-you can kiss that project manager position goodbye. Probably your Saintess promotion too.”
Quinn’s face had gone from pale to ghostly white. Her hands trembled at her sides, her Saintess aura flickering erratically. She’d been humiliated before, but this-this was complete annihilation.
Wesley Hartford shoved past Quinn, his hand raised to push Marcus. “You worthless piece of-”
“Don’t touch my husband.”
Quinn’s voice cut through the chaos like ice. Her Saintess aura flared brilliant gold, filling the lobby with divine pressure that made everyone take an involuntary step back. Her eyes blazed with holy power.

Not because she cared about Marcus. Not because she felt any affection or loyalty. But because their agreement required her to maintain the appearance of a united couple in public. Allowing Wesley to assault Marcus would shatter that illusion completely.
Wesley froze, his hand still raised. “Quinn, you can’t seriously be defending-”
“He is my husband,” Quinn said coldly, her aura pulsing with warning. “Whatever issues we have are private. No one touches him. Is that understood?”
The authority in her voice-the command of a Saintess-made even Wesley back down, though rage
twisted his features.
Marcus looked at Quinn, at her protective stance that meant nothing, at the cold indifference in her eyes
even as she defended him. Then he turned back to Madison.
“Call your manager,” Marcus said calmly.
“What?” Madison blinked.
“Your manager. Call them. Now.”
The employees laughed again, but it sounded forced now, uncertain.
“Oh, this should be good,” Oliver sneered. “What are you going to do, Marcus? Complain that we hurt your
feelings?”

Madison picked up the phone, clearly humoring what she thought was a delusional customer. “Mr. Pierce? There’s a… situation in the lobby. A guest is requesting your presence.”
Whatever response came through made her eyes widen slightly. “Yes, sir. Right away, sir.”
She hung up. “Mr. Pierce will be down momentarily.”
“Tobias Pierce?” Wesley’s laugh was harsh. “The Azure Pierce’s general manager? He’s going to come down here and throw you out personally, Marcus. I can’t wait to see-”
The elevator chimed.
Tobias Pierce emerged-fifty years old, impeccably dressed, moving with the controlled urgency of someone who’d just received information that changed everything. His eyes scanned the lobby, found Marcus, and went wide.
Then he ran.
Actually ran across the marble floor, his expensive shoes clicking rapidly, his face flushed with what looked like panic.
“Mr. Steel!” Tobias gasped, nearly stumbling to a stop. He bowed-actually bowed-so deeply his forehead almost touched his knees. “Forgive us! Forgive us for not recognizing you immediately! If I’d known-if anyone had told me-”
The lobby fell absolutely silent.
“The Emperor’s Hall has been prepared,” Tobias continued breathlessly, still bowing. “Please, allow us to escort you and Mrs. Steel upstairs. Everything is ready. Everything.”
“Mrs. Steel?” Quinn whispered, her face a mask of shock.
“The… the Emperor’s Hall?” Madison stammered behind the desk. “Sir, that’s-”
“Reserved for the most prestigious guests in Azure Pierce’s history,” Tobias finished, finally
straightening. “Mr. Steel has full access. Unlimited. Permanent.”
The Hartford Group employees stood frozen, their phones still raised but forgotten, their mouths hanging open.
“This is impossible,” Robert Chen said weakly.
“That card…” Jessica’s voice came out strangled. “What is that card?”
“That,” Tobias said with reverence, “is direct access to every Azure Pierce property worldwide. Only five
exist. And Mr. Steel holds one of them.”
Suddenly the employees were cheering.
