CHAPTER 29 PART 2

Then he turned back to Quinn, offered his arm again, and continued toward the exit as if nothing had happened.

Chaos exploded.

Cash Lawson set Jaxon down and attacked Aaron with everything he had-Diamond Leg blazing with power, his decade of training unleashed in a flurry of devastating strikes. Aaron met him blow for blow, the two elites clashing in a display of power that made everyone else scramble backward.

Marcus walked through the destruction with Quinn, his arm protectively around her shoulders, shielding her from the violence erupting around them.

“Wait!” Cash disengaged from Aaron, breathing hard. “Before you decide anything-look downstairs.”

He gestured to the windows. Several of his men rushed to pull back the curtains.

What they revealed made Cash Lawson’s confident expression drain away completely.

Below the Azure Pierce Hotel, the streets were packed. Hundreds-no, thousands-of men in identical black suits stood in perfect formation. All carrying long knives that gleamed in the streetlights. All standing absolutely still, waiting for orders.

Aaron Jackson’s army.

Aaron pulled out his phone, sent a single text message, and the entire mass of men below shifted. They began moving toward the hotel entrance with synchronized precision, ready to storm upstairs on his command.

Cash Lawson’s face went ashen. This wasn’t two hundred drunk rich kids and their bodyguards. This was a professional military force. This was what real power looked like when it stopped pretending to play nice.

“You see?” Aaron’s voice carried across the frozen room. “I could have ended this at any moment. I’ve been… polite… because of the Sacred Saintess’s presence and my respect for proper forms.” His eyes swept across every face in the Imperial Hall. “But if anyone-anyone-dares to stop Marcus Steel, the husband and protector of the Sacred Saintess Quinn Hartford, I will have them die under a thousand cuts. Slowly. Publicly. As a lesson to everyone else who forgets their place.”

Dom Martinez moved forward, his massive frame pushing aside Brand family men like they were children. He created a clear path to the exit, his expression promising extreme violence to anyone stupid enough to block it.

Marcus and Quinn walked through the parted crowd untouched. Every eye watched them leave-the Dragon King and the Sacred Saintess, arm in arm, untouchable despite two hundred enemies surrounding them.

The Imperial Hall doors closed behind them.

Only then did panic truly set in.

“You USELESS!” Jaxon grabbed an empty bottle and smashed it over Cash Lawson’s head. Glass shattered. Beer and blood mixed. “You’re supposed to be the Brand family’s strongest enforcer! You let them walk out! You let him break my nose! USELESS!”

Cash grabbed Jaxon by the collar and dragged him to the window, forcing him to look down at the streets below.

“You see that?” Cash’s voice shook with barely controlled fear. “That’s Aaron Jackson’s real power. That’s what we’ve been avoiding for three years. And you-you idiot child-you just declared war on it because your pride got hurt!”

Jaxon stared down at the thousands of armed men, at the casual display of force that made the Brand family’s two hundred look like a joke, and finally-finally-understanding began to penetrate his rage-fogged mind.

But instead of backing down, instead of recognizing he’d lost, Jaxon’s face twisted into something ugly and obsessive.

He grabbed a chair and hurled it through the window. Glass exploded outward, falling stories to the street below. His scream tore through the night.

“If I don’t avenge this, I swear I’m no human!” His voice cracked with fury and humiliation and something approaching madness. “Sacred Saintess or not! Aaron Jackson or not! I’ll make them both pay! I’ll make Marcus Steel pay! I’ll make everyone who witnessed this pay!”

Cash Lawson stared at his young master-at the broken, bleeding, beer-soaked heir who’d just sworn vengeance against forces he couldn’t possibly overcome-and felt a cold certainty settle in his chest.

The Brand family had just made an enemy they couldn’t afford.

And Jaxon Brand, in his infinite stupidity, had no idea what that was going to cost them all.

CHAPTER 30 PART 1

Back in the Imperial Hall, Lucas Cooper stood surveying the destruction with cold calculation. Broken furniture, shattered windows, blood stains on marble that would require professional cleaning, crystal chandeliers damaged beyond repair. The Azure Pierce’s most prestigious space looked like a war zone.

His eyes landed on the Hartford Group employees huddled in the corner, their faces pale with terror.

“The Hartford family,” Lucas said, his diplomatic warmth completely evaporated. “You’ll be responsible for tonight’s damages.”

Oliver Hartford, still nursing his injuries from earlier beatings, staggered forward. “What? No! This wasn’t our fault! Marcus Steel caused-”

“Your employee,” Lucas interrupted coldly. “Your company event. Your responsibility.” He snapped his fingers, and security guards immediately surrounded the Hartford contingent. “Staff, calculate the total bill. Include everything.”

The hotel manager appeared with a tablet, fingers flying across the screen. The number climbed with each tap- damaged furniture, shattered crystal, broken windows, premium cleaning services, compensation for other guests ‘disrupted evenings.

“The total comes to one million, three hundred and forty thousand dollars,” the manager announced.

Oliver’s face went from pale to gray. “That’s… that’s impossible! We can’t-

“You have three hours,” Lucas said flatly, checking his expensive watch. “Pay in full, or face the consequences. Azure Pierce has connections throughout Grayson City. I’m sure I don’t need to explain what unpaid debts mean for your family’s business relationships.”

“But we didn’t-“Jessica started.

“Three hours,” Lucas repeated, his tone final. Then he turned and walked toward the exit where Marcus and Quinn waited, his expression shifting back to respectful courtesy. “Mr. Steel, Lady Hartford, please allow me to escort you out properly.”

Oliver watched Lucas Cooper-one of the city’s most powerful businessmen-treat Marcus Steel with genuine deference while condemning the Hartford employees to financial ruin. His hands shook as he pulled out his phone.

“Grandfather Zachary,” Oliver’s voice cracked when the call connected. “We have a problem. A very expensive problem.”

Zachary Hartford ultimately paid the 1.34 million dollars, his face twisted with fury as he authorized the wire transfer. The moment the Hartford contingent exited Azure Pierce-freed from Lucas Cooper’s cold hospitality— Zachary’s cane came down hard across Oliver’s back.

CRACK!

Oliver stumbled, crying out in pain and shock. Zachary Hartford had never-in Oliver’s entire privileged life- struck him physically. Verbally berated, yes. Disappointed looks, certainly. But actual physical punishment?

“Grandfather, please-” Oliver gasped.

“Silence!” Zachary’s voice shook with rage. “One point three million dollars! Do you understand what you’ve cost this family? What embarrassment you’ve brought to the Hartford name?”

The cane came down again, and Oliver could only bow his head and accept it, knowing he deserved far worse.

Meanwhile, Marcus and Quinn had already returned home.

The car ride had been quiet, filled with Quinn’s racing thoughts and unasked questions. She kept stealing glances at Marcus-this stranger who wore her husband’s face-trying to reconcile three years of perceived weakness with tonight’s display of absolute power.

“Marcus,” she finally said as they pulled into the driveway, “what really happened tonight? How do you know Aaron Jackson? Why did he call you elder brother? What-”

“Skyler Reed and Aaron Jackson are friends,” Marcus said calmly, using the cover story he’d prepared. “They stepped in to help when the situation got out of hand. That’s all.”

The explanation was simple. Clean. And Quinn’s Saintess intuition screamed it was incomplete at best.

CHAPTER 30 PART 2

But she was simply happy-genuinely happy-to see Marcus calmer, stronger, more confident than she’d ever witnessed. The man who’d protected her tonight, who’d stood against the Brand family without flinching, who’d made Aaron Jackson himself bow in respect…

That wasn’t the unemployed nobody she’d married. That wasn’t even the stranger who’d survived the earthquake. That was something else entirely.

Her Saintess senses had detected it during the confrontation-ancient power stirring within Marcus, something that felt older than her sacred bloodline, operating on frequencies her divine training couldn’t fully comprehend. Dragon energy? Cultivation techniques beyond her understanding? Or something else altogether?

Who are you really? The question burned in her mind, but she didn’t ask it aloud. Not yet. Not when things between them felt so fragile and new.

They entered the Hartford family home together, Marcus’s hand briefly touching the small of her back in a gesture that felt protective rather than possessive. Quinn’s heart did something complicated in her chest.

But the moment of peace shattered instantly.
