CHAPTER 50 PART 1

The executive floor buzzed with morning activity when Quinn and Marcus stepped off the elevator. But the atmosphere shifted immediately-conversations stopped mid-sentence, heads turned, eyes tracked them with a mixture of curiosity and malice.

Oliver Hartford stood waiting by the reception desk, arms crossed, a triumphant smirk on his face. Behind him clustered several department heads and managers, clearly summoned to witness whatever he had planned.

“Quinn,” Oliver said loudly, his voice carrying across the open office space. “I heard about your little… announcement… downstairs. Making Marcus your secretary? How creative.”

“It’s an executive hiring decision,” Quinn said, her voice steady despite the audience. “Which I have the authority to make as project manager of the Titan partnership.”

“Actually,” Oliver’s smirk widened, “you don’t. I checked with HR and Legal this morning. Secretary positions require board approval for anyone related to executives. Company policy. Section 4.7 of the employee handbook.”

He pulled out a tablet, displaying the relevant policy for everyone to see. “So unless you can get Grandfather Zachary and the board to approve your husband as your secretary-which we both know won’t happen-Marcus here has no authorization to be on this floor.”

Quinn’s Saintess aura flared with indignation. “That’s a technicality designed to-”

“Designed to prevent exactly this kind of nepotism,” Oliver interrupted smoothly. “Look, Quinn, I understand you want to help your… husband… but there are proper channels. You can’t just wave your Saintess status around and ignore company policy.”

Several managers nodded in agreement, emboldened by Oliver’s confidence.

“Besides,” Oliver continued, his voice taking on a mocking edge, “a Sacred Saintess shouldn’t lower herself by making such a man her secretary. It damages the family’s reputation. What will clients think when they see the great Quinn Hartford with an unemployed nobody as her assistant?”

“Marcus is my husband,” Quinn said coldly. “Not a ‘nobody.””

“Is he though?” Oliver’s laugh was cruel. “Everyone knows your marriage is a contractual arrangement. One year to maintain appearances for your Saintess promotion. You’re not actually choosing him-you’re stuck with him temporarily.”

The gathered employees whispered, some pulling out phones to record.

“And that arrangement will end soon enough,” Oliver added with satisfaction. “Your project manager position is temporary too. Once the Titan partnership is finalized, you’ll be reassessed. And when Grandfather Zachary decides you’re not performing to standards…” He let the implication hang. “Well, let’s just say I’m positioned perfectly to take over your responsibilities.”

Quinn’s hands clenched at her sides, her divine energy crackling in the air. “You have no right to—”

Marcus placed a gentle hand on her arm. “It’s fine, Quinn.”

“It’s not fine!” Quinn turned to him, tears of frustration threatening. “They’re treating you like garbage! Like you’re nothing!”

“Because they believe I’m nothing,” Marcus said calmly. “And honestly? Their opinion doesn’t matter to me.”

He took her hand, his grip warm and solid. “Let’s go. We don’t need to stay here and be disrespected.”

“Where will you go?” Oliver called mockingly as they turned toward the elevator. “Back home to live off the Hartford family’s charity? Face it, Marcus-you need us more than we need you!”

The gathered employees laughed, emboldened by Oliver’s cruelty.

“We won’t come back,” Marcus said over his shoulder, his voice carrying clearly, “until this company comes begging us to return.”

The laughter intensified. Several managers actually doubled over with amusement.

“Begging?” Oliver gasped between laughs. “The company begging YOU? That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard all year! You’re a worthless, unemployed son-in-law who got lucky marrying a Saintess! What could you possibly-”

Marcus turned around.

His movement was so fast that most people didn’t see it happen. One moment he was ten feet away, the next his hand connected with Oliver’s face with devastating force.

SLAP!

The sound echoed across the executive floor like a gunshot. Oliver’s head snapped sideways, his body lifting slightly off the ground before crashing into the reception desk. He slid down, blood streaming from his nose and split lip, his eyes unfocused.

Absolute silence crashed over the office.

Marcus stood over Oliver’s crumpled form, his dragon eyes glowing faintly. “If it weren’t for Quinn-if it weren’t for the fact that you’re her family-I would have ended you long ago. Remember that. Every single day you draw breath, thank your cousin for my mercy.”

Several employees had their phones out, recording, but none of them moved. None of them spoke. The speed and power of that slap had been… wrong. Superhuman. The kind of strength that shouldn’t exist.

“Did you see how fast he moved?” someone whispered nervously.

“That wasn’t normal strength… his hand was barely visible…”

“What IS he?”

Marcus took Quinn’s hand again. “Let’s go.”

CHAPTER 50 PART 2

They walked to the elevator in silence, the crowd parting before them like water. As the doors closed, Quinn looked at Marcus with complicated emotions-shock, concern, and underneath it all, something that might have been pride.

Oliver pushed himself up, one hand clutching his destroyed face. Blood dripped between his fingers. His fury overrode the pain, the humiliation, the shock of what had just happened.

“SOMEONE GET ME GRANDFATHER!” Oliver roared. “NOW!”

Fifteen minutes later, Oliver burst into Zachary Hartford’s office, his face a mess of blood and swelling. The patriarch looked up from his desk, his expression shifting from annoyance to alarm.

“What happened to you?”

“Marcus Steel!” Oliver’s voice came out distorted through his swollen jaw. “He attacked me! In front of everyone! Assaulted me on company property!”

He launched into a frantic explanation-Quinn’s attempt to make Marcus her secretary, Oliver’s rightful refusal, Marcus’s violent response. He painted himself as the victim, defending company policy against nepotism and violence.

Zachary’s face darkened with each word. “This has gone too far. Quinn’s gotten too bold. She thinks because she has Skyler Reed’s backing-”

“That’s exactly it!” Oliver interrupted. “She thinks Reed’s protection makes her untouchable! But what if… what if Reed’s protection wasn’t as solid as she thinks?”

Zachary’s eyes narrowed with interest. “What are you suggesting?”

“Leonardo Lancaster,” Oliver said, his damaged mouth twisting into a painful smile. “Chairman of Titan Group. Skyler Reed’s boss. And from what I’ve heard, not exactly Reed’s biggest supporter.”

Zachary leaned back in his chair, calculation replacing anger. “You think Lancaster would listen to us?”

“I think Lancaster would be very interested to hear about potential misconduct by one of his vice presidents,” Oliver said carefully. “About how Quinn Hartford-a project manager with limited experience-got her position through inappropriate relationships with Skyler Reed. About how she’s threatened to pull Hartford Group out of the Titan partnership unless Reed protects her worthless husband.”

“That’s all lies,” Zachary said-not with moral outrage, but with professional assessment.

“Does it matter?” Oliver countered. “Lancaster already dislikes Reed. He’s been looking for reasons to undermine him, to seize more power in Titan Group. We give him ammunition-real or fabricated-and he’ll take care of Reed for us. And once Reed falls, Quinn loses her only protection.”

Zachary considered this, his business instincts warring with family loyalty. But the scales tipped quickly-Quinn had been defying him repeatedly, embarrassing the family, choosing her worthless husband over Hartford

interests.

“Make the call,” Zachary said finally. “But be subtle. Lancaster’s smart-if he smells desperation, he won’t help us.”

Oliver pulled out his phone with his good hand, dialing a number he’d obtained through careful networking. The call connected after three rings.
