Chapter 132

0190

Maxwell’s voice cut through the stage, flat and hard. Where’s Elsa?

She’ll be here soon,I replied, the words barely filling the space between us. He nodded, but his eyes held no warmth, only a smoldering anger.

Clay’s planning to move back to the Highlands next week. think I’ll go back home, too,he said, his voice steady but carrying a finality that twisted something deep inside me. I felt a hollow dread settle in, the fear I’d buried now rising to the surface. I had hoped, desperately, that it wouldn’t come to this, that somehow we could weather this pain together. But I could see pow that I was alone.

Maybemaybe I could come with you?I asked, my voice sounding smaller than I intended. But he only shook his head, his expression hardening.

I don’t want you near me, Lucian,he said, and his eyes glinted with the flash of his wolf. The raw pain in his gaze cut deeper than any blade.

We followed you, trusted you,he continued, his words filled with a restrained fury that felt like a slap across my face. We let you lead, let you make all the decisions. But when Scarlett came, you did everything you could to make her life hell. You turned your back on her, on us, siding with the same pack members who tore her down, thanks to the girl you couldn’t let go. Stasia should’ve been gone the second we accepted Scarlett, but you kept her around, letting her poison everything we had.

Maxwell’s voice shook as he continued, his words landing like blows. You chose Bianca’s word over Scarlett’s, just because she’d been loyal to your family.

You took every chance to believe the worst of Scarlett, to see her as less, because of your pride and arrogance. His voice rose, a growl rumbling in his

throat, his wolf just beneath the surface.

You dragged us down, Lucian, into this pit of bitterness and pain. And now, look where we are. Look at what you’ve cost us,he said, his words breaking as

tears began to streak down his cheeks. His pain, the depth of it, was something I could feel as if it were my own. He wasn’t just grieving Scarletthe was

grieving the destruction of everything he’d once believed in.

Then his voice softened, a quiet bitterness lacing his words. How did you feel when Elsa said Nikolay was the good guy? When she told us he did everything he could to keep the peace, even if it meant wiping out your socalled family, our family? Those people he killedmaybe they were part of the problem, and maybe Nikolay saw us for who we really are. He knew the kind of men we were, and that’s why he kept his daughter from us.

He wiped his face roughly, his gaze distant and full of sorrow. We’re wicked men, Lucian. We deserve every ounce of pain we’re going through right now.

His words hung heavy in the air, and I could do nothing but nod, feeling their truth settle deep within me. I knew that nothing I said could fix the daysage I’d caused, could bridge the chasm that now separated us. We were broken, each of us shattered in our own way, and there was no undoing it.

I looked down, bracing myself for the lonely, desolate days that lay ahead. I knew that once Clay and Maxwell left, our alliance would be over, and I’d be left alone, no longer bound to them, no longer anything more than a memory to them. I had lost everything. I had lost Scarlect. I had lost my brothers. And now, I was left with nothing but the empty shell of what I’d once been.
