Scarlett
Chapter 137-
“I didn’t see this coming,” she admitted softly. Ever since she’d arrived in the North and witnessed the mess we were tangled in, she’d been quietly sympathetic. But this was more than that; now she truly understood the depth of the bale we’d dug ourselves into.
“The spirits urge you to ally with Keith to fight against the rising darkness. But now that he’s involved with Scarlett, that partnership might be impossible. 1 suspect it’s his magic that surrounds her,” she said, and Maxwell’s growl rumbled through the room, raw and angry.
How could we hope to win her back now? If Keith wanted Scarlett by his side, he would fight to keep her. And with the strength of his magic, it wasn’t a battle we could win. The bleakness of it all settled around us, heavy and suffocating.
Maxwell clenched his fists, his voice tight with frustration. “He must have tampered with our bond. Why would he go to all this effort over a woman already claimed by her mates?” He shook his head, as bewildered as I felt.
It made no sense, and yet here we were, on the edge of despair, with no clear way forward. Scarlett had been ours–her heart, her soul, her very essence. But with Keith’s influence surrounding her, the bond we’d thought unbreakable was now slipping through our fingers.
Elsa sighed, and her voice carried a deep sadness that cut through us. There had been a time when she openly called us fools for the way we’d treated Scarlett, and I doubted that her opinion had softened. Only fools would risk their mate, treat her with coldness, and let her slip away the way we had.
The memory of that last encounter with Scarlett stung bitterly. She had pleaded with us, and we’d turned our backs, choosing to keep our people’s approval rather than risk their anger by protecting her. Our grand plan to sneak her out of Redcape under the cover of night was a feeble attempt, a plan that only underscored how little we had valued her. We’d been so blind, so intent on keeping control, that we hadn’t realized we were letting go of the one thing that truly mattered. We had failed her, failed ourselves.
I waited, tense and silent, for Elsa to answer Maxwell’s question.
“Unlike me, Keith has powerful magic. He can see things that we can’t. Perhaps he recognised something in her that you missed–something you were too
blind to see. Maybe he saw her worth. After all, the three of you didn’t; you exposed her vulnerability to everyone in Redcape,” she said, her voice laced with
regret. “Keith has been searching for a Luna, and what could be more powerful, more rare, than a Luna who is also a Valkin Alpha with magic? He struck
gold.*
Her words landed like a punch to the gut, and for a moment, I could only stare at her. Had she just confirmed what we’d all suspected? Scarlett was truly a
Valkin Alpha?
“So, you believe she’s a Valkin Alpha?” I asked, almost afraid of the answer.
Elsa sighed heavily. “I can’t be certain, but the signs are all there. Her wolf is fierce, she’s experienced a strong heat cycle, and he has magic. I suspect female Valkins mature differently, later than males. As the first of her kind, Scarlett has probably endured this awakening in a way that’s more painful and
confusing than any of us can imagine.”
Her words echoed in my mind, and a hundred painful memories of Scarlett flashed before me. The struggles, the isolation, the heartbreak she’d faced–all because we’d failed to understand what she was going through. Now, she was in the West, with a powerful Alpha who seemed to value her in ways we never did. The weight of regret sat heavily in my chest.
“Please… advise us,” Lucian spoke, his voice choked with desperation. Elsa’s eyes softened as she touched the crystal pendant around her neck, closing her eyes in concentration. We waited, barely breathing, as she communed with the spirits.
Finally, she opened her eyes and spoke. “Go to the West. Let destiny take its course.”
Her words were maddeningly vague, as always, leaving us with nothing concrete to hold onto. Maxwell let out a frustrated sigh. “So, are we suppased to
