Once in the lounge, I made myself comfortable on a couch, anxiously waiting. When Morgar, returned with Murtha, I felt a wave of everfans wash your ge She looked the same, but warmer now, dressed in thick, cozy clothes with tears glistening in her eyes. I could barely told bank my own tears as 1 rashed her, wrapping her in a tight embrace She held me just as fiberely.
“Oh, Scarlett,” she whispered, her voice shaky, filled with a mix of relief and worry.
Pulling back, I searched her face. “How have you been, Martha? Are you safe? Please tell me you haven’t gotten into trouble,” I said, hoping Lucian or the others hadn’t harmed her.
She shook her head, tears spilling down her cheeks as she took in the warmth of the lounge. She looked back at me, her eyes filled with something couldn’t quite place.
“The goddess has blessed you, Scarlett,” she murmured, her tone full of admiration. “You deserve all of this.” I led her to a couch, motioning for the staff to bring her juice and sherbet-something sweet and comforting.
She glanced around the room, then looked at me with a bittersweet smile. “Alpha Keith is doting on you, I see,” she said, though sadness lingered in her gaze.
But then her expression changed, and she reached for my hand. “Scarlett, I need you to come home,” she said, her words laced with a desperation that made my heart sink.
My smile faded, and I pulled back slightly. It was as I’d feared; Lucian must have pressured her into coming. “This is my home now, Martha,” I said firmly, my voice steady. But she shook her head, her grip on my hand tightening.
“Please, Scarlett. If you don’t come back, the North will fall apart,” she pleaded, her voice filled with urgency. I stared at her, disbelief rising in me. How
could that even be possible?
“I can’t go back to those three, Martha,” I said, my voice thick with anger and hurt. “You saw what they did to me. They left me out there to die in the cold. If it hadn’t been for you, I wouldn’t be here.” The memories were raw, and I could feel them cutting through me like fresh wounds.
Martha’s eyes shimmered with regret. “I shouldn’t have helped you that night, Scarlett. I regret it every day,” she whispered, her voice choked with emotion. “I should have trusted my instincts, but I believed you were doomed, that they had lost faith in you.”
I shook my head, feeling a sharp pain twist in my chest. What could possibly have changed?
“No, Scarlett,” she continued, her voice resolute. “Thirty minutes after I freed you, they came back to the spot. Alpha Maxwell was dressed, fully prepared… I believe they were coming to take you away from Redcape.*
A bitter laugh escaped me. “Or to check if the cold had done its job,” I said, sarcasm heavy in my tone. I didn’t want to hope, to believe in a narrative that might only lead to more pain. But Martha’s face crumpled, tears falling freely.
“You didn’t see them, Scarlett,” she said, her voice breaking. “They were howling, searching for you. They haven’t been the same since you left. Alpha Clay…” he’s been searching for you in every town, showing your picture, begging anyone who might have seen you to ask you to come home. He’s barely eating. Maxwell… he’s spent his time torturing Bianca, her daughter, and the couple who were supposed to care for you. They made them suffer as they made you suffer.”
I closed my eyes, turning my head to look away, but she grabbed my hand, squeezing it tight. “Please, Scarlett. Let me explain everything.”.

“I can’t come back, Martha. I’m with Keith now,” I said, my voice wavering even though I tried to sound strong. Mattha shook her head, pain shadowing her
“This this is all my fault. My Alphas can’t fight Keith for you; they’re barely holding on as it is. But you aren’t Keith’s mate, Scarlett. You belong with your true mates.
