Chapter 163-
“Hi,” he said, his vatre wovering the
“What do you want?” I asked, my tone colder than I intended, but I didn’t soften it.
“I wanted to know… what you’d like to eat for dinner,” he replied, shifting uncomfortably
I narrowed my eyes. “You could have just linked me, Maxwell. You didn’t have to come here in person.”
He gave a small nod, almost apologetic. “I know. I wanted to ask you directly. Face-to-face.”
I sighed, feeling the walls rise around my heart. “Fine. I’m not hungry. Thanks to the ‘hospitality’ I received here, I’ve learned how to fire on little. Besides, I’m sure I’ll find something to eat in the woods. Tell Bianca, or whoever’s cooking, to leave me out of the food plan.”
I turned to leave, but he reached out, his hand brushing my arm. I glanced down at his fingers on my skin, and he withdrew them quickly, his expression pained.
“We came back for you that night,” he said, his voice pleading, desperate. “To take you to the South. I was going to leave with you, Scarlett. We weren’t
planning to abandon you. We love you. All of us… things have been hell since that morning with Geoffery. Please, just let us make it right.”
His words grated against my defences, and I felt anger bubbling up, mixed with a familiar ache. I raised an eyebrow, unable to hide the bitterness in my
voice.
“If you cared, it wouldn’t have come to that in the first place,” I replied, my voice sharp. “Don’t even try to blame this on Lucian. I wouldn’t have been dragged to trial, humiliated like that, if you hadn’t all gone along with it. So if you really want to do right by me, keep your distance, Alpha.”
I took a step back, forcing the distance between us, needing it as much as I hated it. “I’m here to help you with Garland. That’s it. Once that’s done, I want a divorce. The bond might be permanent, but this marriage isn’t. I want my territory back. I don’t care what you think of my father, don’t care about any of your suspicions. And I don’t care about your apologies.” My voice broke, but I walked away before he could see it.
I felt the tears spill over as I turned from him, my heart wrenching despite every wall I’d built. I didn’t want to feel his pain-it echoed mine too deeply. I didn’t want to see the hurt in his eyes, the same hurt he’d allowed to shatter me once. Every step away from him felt like a struggle, but I knew I had to do this. Letting them back in would only tear me apart again.
As I put distance between us, his voice rose, his words breaking through the silence and reaching me, each one a plea, an anchor pulling me back.
“We’ll follow you, Scarlett. Wherever you go, we’ll follow. Like lost puppies until you look at us the way you used to. Until you see that our love is real and we’re truly sorry. So if you don’t want that, if you don’t want us near you… then do your magic and kill us now. Because we won’t give up on you, Scarlett!”
