Scarlett
Chapter 188
We found a rhythm, intense and consuming, and as we moved together, I felt Midnight stirring inside me. She surged forward, and before I knew it, sh her teeth down onto my mark on his neck, sealing us in a way words never could. This was her way of saying it, and mine, too–there was no going bad This bond was ours, unbreakable, and nothing would change that.
Maxwell’s body tensed, a deep groan escaping his lips as he held me close, his own release coming in powerful waves as he pulsed inside me, his arms wrapped around me like he’d never let go.
We lay together, silent but connected, spent and sated, neither of us needing to say anything. The intensity of what had just happened filled the room, settling over us as we lay there.
It was a moment that felt both surreal and inevitable, like we’d crossed a line together we could never uncross. And as I lay there, feeling the steady beat his heart against mine, I knew-whatever else happened, it had been worth every single moment.
Maxwell pulled me close, pressing my head against his chest. I could hear the steady beat of his heart, grounding me, comforting me in a way I hadn’t felt i a long time.
“I wasn’t leaving, you know,” I murmured, a hint of a smile tugging at my lips. I felt him tense, then he looked down at me, surprise and curiosity flashing across his face. He sat up, and I followed, so we were both facing each other.
“I was going to tell you in the pollen path… before I got the vision,” I admitted softly. The shock in his expression was unmistakable, but there was something else, too-a deep relief that seemed to lighten the worry lines on his face.
“What about the South?” he asked, searching my face. “I thought you wanted to go home?”
I took a deep breath, choosing my words carefully. “There’s nothing for me there anymore. I just wanted my… my pound of flesh from David and that bearded man. That was it. Besides,” I added, my voice softer, “finding a fated isn’t something that happens every day. I’m not so quick to throw that away.
He pulled me close again, his arms wrapping around me in a gentle but firm embrace. “What about Keith?” he asked, his voice low. I sighed, thinking back to those painful days.
“When I went to Keith… it was because I thought you’d all left me to die. I believed I had to start over somewhere new, somewhere I was wanted,” I explained. I felt his hand tense on my back, as if he was feeling my pain, carrying it with me. “I was lost then.”
“I’m sorry for everything, Scarlett,” he whispered, his voice thick with remorse. I could feel his sincerity, his regret, pouring into those words, and I placed my hand gently on his arm, grounding us both.
“I know, Maxwell. I know all of you are. It’s just… hard to let go of the pain, of everything I went through.” I tople a shaky breath, looking up into his eyes.. “But I’ll try. I’ll try to let it go.” I felt a weight lift as I said it, like maybe, just maybe, I could finally start to heal.
A small smile tugged at my lips as I added. “But don’t tell Lucian just yet. I want him to stew a little longer” Maxwell let out a soft laugh, the saund wachi and familiar, and for a moment, everything feh lighter.
Then, suddenly, there was a compaction outside. Maxwell stiffened beside me, his body alert, tension returning to his hams. The warmth of the moment slipped away as we both listened, waiting to see what might come next.
“What’s going on?” I asked, noticing the sudden tension in his pasture.
“Garland is here,” Maxwell replied, already on his feet, pulling on a pair of shorts. I quickly followed, slipping on an oversized t-shirt, ready to pora hu
outside.

Chapter 188 –
But he turned to me, his face serious, his voice laced with worry. “Stay here, Scarlett. I don’t want you getting hurt. Your magic… it’s not stable
I felt a flicker of irritation and met his eyes. “I thought Lucian was the male chauvinist here. I can handle myself, Max.” But as I said it, I saw the gen fear in his gaze, his worry carving per lines on his face.
He let out a sigh, his eyes softening yet still pleading. “Okay, but promise me you won’t engage unless it’s absolutely necessary. I don’t want Garland to out about your magic. And not just him-no one can know about your wolf or your abilities until Elsa has a better grasp on what’s going on. Please. I’m not asking this because you’re a woman, Scarlett,” he added, his pice almost breaking. “I’m asking because you’re our mate. If anything happens to you. as good as dead. There’d be nothing left to live for, and you know it.”
His words touched something deep inside me, breaking through any defiance I might’ve felt. His concern wasn’t about control or doubt; it was love, fear, and a bone-deep need to protect me. Whatever quip I might’ve had fell silent, my heart heavy with the weight of what he was saying.
I gave him a silent nod, a promise that I’d take care. Together, we headed outside to join Lucian and Clay, where the tension was already thick in the
quiet calm before an impending storm.
