Chapter 71 Chapter 71: Living proof

Prince River

I had drifted in and out of consciousness so many times that I lost count. Whenever I woke up, though, I saw familiar faces. My sister was there, frantic and arguing with the warriors. Moss and the little boy watched me anxiously, the boy holding the dog that kept trying to sniff me. Even Doris stood in the corner, staring in shock. It was obvious that my condition must have been terrible.

But the one I always found beside me was her: wiping my face or simply sleeping with her arms and head resting on the bed.

Maybe I needed to believe in faith again, because I was convinced that my prayers had saved me. The desperate, angoished plea I had made in the middle of the forest had kept me alive.

“She’s okay, River. Truly, my sister kept telling me.

“I thought the worst…”

“Worse than what you faced?” my sister asked gently. “I need you to give us information. Focus.”

I had already begun to explain, trying to piece together what had happened during those terrible days. Moss had gone back several times to the place where

they found me, searching for something more.

“I should have died, Bri. I was finished. I was wounded. With my last bit of strength, I tried to reach the river. I fought for her to be with her again. I don’t

remember much, but I must have fallen. That the only reason I’m still here.”

“Those arrows were from soldiers. Someone tried to kill you. Someone took advantage of the situation.”

“Yes, unfortunately, we have far too many suspects.”

“This has to be a conspiracy from deep within.”

“Your brother told me the race for the throne has only just begun. Honestly, though, what worries me more is what’s happening in the forest.”

“There are two races,” I said, glancing at my sister as I reached for Verbena’s hand. She sighed softly in her sleep.

“She’s been better since you arrived. I think it’s the bond.”

“I have to get her out of here. I swear it. I have to get her away from the forest. I need to keep her safe. Even if I as far from her, I feel like I die…”. murmured, just as we heard a commotion outside. Moments later, someone stood at the door to my chamber.

“Sire, I couldn’t stop them,” one of my warriors said,

Apparently, I wasn’t in command even in my own room. When I saw the high general’s warriors grimace at my arrival, I knew the news wouldn’t be

“His Majesty the King requests an audience with the prince,” he said casually.

“We told you several times what condition he is in,” Bri insisted.

“Orders cannot be taken lightly. His request cannot be refused, or it will be considered an offense punishable by law,” the warrior repeated.

“What are you doing, River?”

“My father waits for no one. Not even his injured son.”

“You can’t get up! You still have a long way to go before you recover,” Bri insisted.

“Help me out of this bed,” I said.

She looked at me as if I were insane, but helped me into a robe. I dragged myself across the room, leaning on her. Every inch of my body hurt, but I knew they wouldn’t leave me alone until I did as he asked.

“I’m never leaving you.”

“I need you to be safe,” I pleaded.

She nodded, and I entered on my own two feet, not dragged in like an animal.

Voices echoed from inside. A discussion was already underway.

“Your Majesty, we beg you to open an investigation into what happened in the forest…” I recognized the head healer.

“It was foolishness. River should never have gotten involved. The humans should have handled their own responsibilities. If she survived, then it was part of the prophecy,” Marissa replied. My father murmured something, but when I stepped into view, and when he saw me, the room fell silent.

“River…” he muttered. Shock spread across every face, even Hunter’s and Marissa’s.

“Here I am, Father. Just as you asked.”

“By the heavens! Bring him a chair! Why wasn’t I told how bad his condition was?” He truly seemed angry, almost as though he cared.

“This is what happens when a cursed scribe and your beloved general send me into the forest, knowing full well what I was facing.” He clearly did not believe what they told him.

“We did what was necessary, Your Majesty. As you instructed,” The High General said, glaring at me.

“I never said you could leave me without my son! This has gone too far, and someone will pay for it. I want my sons to be strong and willing to do anything. I want them to have a healthy rivalry! Do you know how difficult it is to have four sons? Does anyone have any idea? I am the elf with the most children in

Γ the entire kingdom!” he shouted furiously.

His wife stepped forward, trying to calm him.

“My dear, this was all a misunderstanding. None of this is your fault. We will investigate to understand exactly what happened,” she said, stroking his arm.

“I want a full report immediately!

“This has been too stressful for His Majesty. I think we should send a positive message to the kingdom, that the prince is well and that everything is under control despite the difficulties,” she insisted.

I could hardly believe what I was hearing. But the worst was yet to come.

“What do you mean?” my father asked.

“We could organize a celebration in honor of the prince. Perhaps hic could announce that his human wife is close to be pregnant. Isn’t that what you’ve been trying to accomplish since you arrived, River?” she asked, watching me.

My urge to cut out her tongue grew ronger by the second.

“A celebration wouldn’t be a bad idea. It would send the right message, my father mused.
