Chapter 28
I was just about to suggest a solution when the sound of a door opening drew our attention. Scarlett stepped out of the room, and I realised, with a sinking feeling, that she must have heard every word. Her face was calm, but there was a sadness in her eyes that made my heart ache.
“In your room, Alpha Clay,” she said gently. “I’ve made the bed for you.” Her words were polite, but I could sense the pain behind them. She had been resting, or so I thought. Instead, she’d been lying there, hearing every painful detail of the conversation that w had tried to keep from her. I wished, more than anything, that I could take back the words I’d said, could somehow shield her from the truth.
Lucian’s eyes burned with anger as he looked at me, suspicion clouding his gaze. I could feel the accusation there–that he believed I’d spilled his plans to hurt her. But I hadn’t meant for her to find out like this. None of us did.
Scarlett took a steadying breath, and when she spoke, her voice was barely above a whisper but filled with determination. “May I…
take the spare room outside this apartment, please? Just for now. That way, Lucian and Stasia can be together in his room, and
everyone can be… at peace.”
Her request was practical, even logical, but it felt wrong. I hated the idea of her being so far from us, and I knew Clay felt the same.
Her suggestion was a compromise, a way to give everyone what they thought they wanted. But it felt like a surrender, a sacrifice
none of us wanted her to make.
Lucian’s lips twisted into a reluctant smile, understanding the impact of her words. “Okay,” he said, his tone laced with satisfaction,
knowing this decision was the last thing Clay or I wanted.
Scarlett moved with quiet resolve, gathering her few belongings and tucking them into a small bag. She clutched the blanket Clay had given her, her fingers trembling slightly, though she tried to hide it. Without another word, she stepped past us and out of the
apartment, closing the door softly behind her.
“Now, you’ll see her true colors,” Lucian sneered, a twisted satisfaction in his tone. “I wonder what you’ll do when she starts
sneaking men into that new room of hers.”
I felt a surge of frustration, exhausted by his petty spite. Lucian’s bitterness was tiring, a smokescreen of accusations to mask his own guilt. He acted as though he were innocent, a saint among sinners, but I knew the truth–neither of us were blameless. If anyone here was tainted, it was us, not her. And soon enough, his self–righteous facade would crumble. Thomas was on his way, and I couldn’t wait for him to arrive and set things straight.
“Just call Thomas and end this,” I said, my voice flat with fatigue. “Let’s see what he has to say.”
Lucian’s eyes flashed with anger, but he forced a smirk. “Fine, if that’s what you want. I’ll call Thomas tomorrow. Hate to pull him from his duties, but since you insist…” His tone was mocking, but I could sense his unease beneath it. I forced a smile and nodded, thanking him, though the sarcasm was lost on neither of us. He turned sharply and disappeared into his room, leaving me standing
with Clay.
Clay studied me with a questioning look. “Why is Thomas coming?” he asked, clearly sensing there was more to it.

I sighed, reaching out to tap his shoulder. “You’ll see soon enough.” I started to walk away, but he grabbed my arm, concern etched deeply in his eyes.
“We
can’t seriously leave Scarlett alone in that room,” he said, his voice barely a whisper. “You know she’s in a fragile place–she’s suicidal.”
My heart pounded with sudden urgency. He was right. I hadn’t thought it through, but Clay’s words cut through any lingering doubts. Without another word, I headed to the guest room, Clay close behind. Neither of us took a moment to rest or freshen up; there was no time for that now. We approached the door, knocking softly at first, not wanting to startle her. When there was no answer, I felt a rising dread. Clay and I exchanged worried glances, and I knocked harder, calling out her name.
Finally, the door opened, and Scarlett appeared in the doorway, her face pale, her eyes wide with worry. She looked at us, confused and a little scared.
The relief that washed over me was intense, but it was short–lived as I took in her expression.
