With the kids in the other room, the adults all moved to sit in the living area and Ford made a show of standing near the bar cart and was mixing drinks like it was his calling. He put a martini in January’s hand and then leaned over her, “I have a question for you.”
“What do you want to know?”
“The guys were talking about your hot manager and one of them showed me a picture he’d snapped of her. What’s her story?” 1
“Oh my god.” She rolled her eyes, “she has a kid and she’s the best thing to ever happen to my company. You are not going to go for my manager.”
“January,” he pleaded, “she’s gorgeous.”
“She’s also a single mom. She has responsibilities and obligations to a kid. Her kid is sixteen and he hasn’t seen his father in ten years. She’s not going to start introducing men into his life now and I’m quoting her.”
“I’d be a great stepdaddy.”
“He is good with kids,” Thisbe nodded.

between them and laughed before sipping her drink while the two looked at each other and made gagging noises.
“Because he is my brother from another mother,” Ford pointed at Gulliver, “and so is he,” he pointed at Glenn, “which means
up she is my sister from another mister. I don’t hook with family, January. That’s gross.”
“Also, he’s ugly and he’s got a small penis. I’ve seen him in swim trunks. If it’s not at least eight, I’m not going there.”
“Thisbe!” Bette scolded furiously. “That is not talk of a lady.”
“She ain’t no lady,” Glenn snorted.
“She definitely is not. Pretty sure she tried to climb a diner owner today,” Gulliver threw her under the bus.
“He has a motorcycle. He offered to take me for a ride.” She wiggled her eyebrows at January.
“His name is Digger. His restaurant is called Digger’s Diner.”
“Yes but did you see the way his jeans fit? I bet it goes to his knees.”
“Thisbe! That is enough. Your grandfather is right there!” Avner scowled, “there are children in the next room.”
“They are laughing like fools over something on her tablet and not listening to anything out here.” She pointed at he grandfather, “and the other night he made a very crude gesture

“Your mother has been gone for a long time. A man has needs.”
“This is not appropriate conversation.”
“Oh, we’re all adults,” Grandfather winked at January.
“There was a time when business and this kind of conversation were never held in a woman’s company,” Avner looked at his father–in–law.
“Yes and now there is a new generation of women reminding the world they are as strong if not stronger than any man,’ Grandfather commented with a tap of his hand on his knee. He looked at Gulliver, “I’m getting hungry. Where is the food?”
“January and Kaylee ordered a pasta feast.”
“Italian?” he looked at her and pointed a finger, “what is wrong with a Greek feast.”
“I had Greek last night.”
“Yeah you did.” Gulliver teased her as she flushed bright red.
“Food, Gulliver. Greek food.”
“Sure, it was,” Ford laughed as he put a drink in Gulliver’s hand.
“Actually, I took her to this little place where they made incredible food, and they had an in–house band, and it was very Bice. We went

for a walk after and January was very angry with me because she wanted our date to end where Glenn was working.”
Glenn who was sipping his own drink choked, “you wanted to come see me work?”
“I really did but Gulliver said he couldn’t trust me yet.”
“Next one,” Glenn laughed as Gulliver frowned, “oh come on. You know you want to bring her.‘
“Are you kidding? I can’t keep my hands off her now. Letting her violent streak loose? She’ll be pregnant in a week.”
She shook her head at his words and nudged his foot with hers, “you’re awful.”
“You love me.”
“Mm.”
