Entering the hotel suite, January was surprised to see her parents sitting on the sofa with Kaylee in between them. The child was bleary–eyed and fighting sleep and she could tell her parents were equally exhausted.

“Why are you all up? Mom, I told you to put her in our room and Gulliver and I would sleep with her, and you could take her bed.”

“She would not go to sleep until she saw her daddy was home safe. Where is he?”

“He’s coming. He stopped in to give an update to his

grandfather. We didn’t think she’d still be awake.” She moved to kneel in front of Kaylee, “hey kiddo. Why are you still up?”

“Did you get the bad lady?”

“We did. We got the bad lady. Daddy had to have a surgery on his arms but he’s going to be okay. He’s really sore and tired though. We need to be very careful around him. He’s not going to be able to lift you for a long time.”

“He got hurt really bad?”

“He did. A doctor had to fix his arm with a pin, and he has a 2:49

“You’ll let a nurse help him toilet, Analia laughed. “I’d rather wipe your father’s arse than have a hot nurse do it.”

“We can get a male one or a bidet. A bidet might be the best idea.”

“What’s a bidet?” Kaylee asked.

“A thing you can attach to a toilet to shoot water on your bum to clean it.”

Kaylee’s eyes grew wide in horror, “that’s gross, Mom!”

“It really is. Enough of this talk though. We need to let Nana and Papa head to bed.”

“Are you sure you’re okay up here alone?” Terrance asked

“Gulliver has guards outside. We’re going to have constant

surveillance for a while just in case there were stragglers we

missed but we’re safe overall.”

“Mom, is my dad going to come up soon?”

“I really want to see him though. I was scared, Mom. I know you said he was going to be okay, but was really scared. I need to see my daddy. Please Mom. Don’t make me go to bed yet. Not until I know he didn’t die.”

“He didn’t die, Kaylee.”

“Darwin said he heard Ernst tell his grandma that if Glenn dies after making him his boyfriend he’d never forgive him. I know Glenn was here with you, but Dad was in the car accident and,” two big fat tears rolled down Kaylee’s cheeks. “Mitsos gets to have a brother with Darwin, but I just get cousins and I don’t want my dad to die!” she suddenly started wailing.

“Yeah, it’s time for me to go to bed.” Analia got up. “You were the one who thought telling her that bad guys hurt her father.”

“Mom, you’re being an ass again.

“See, Nanas are supposed to be the fun times, like making . cookies and volcanoes. This doesn’t seem fun,” she kissed January’s cheek with a grin, “night!”

“I’m with your mother. I mean I know you need to tell her things because you need to train her, but her overactive imagination got away from her too many times to count tonight. If you’re going to drop bombs on her, can you at least leave ice cream or candy for us to comfort her with?” He winked at her and kissed her cheek.

“Night,” she muttered as she moved to sit on the sofa and pulled Kaylee into her arms, feeling the pull in her own neck from the Whiplash and concussion. Now that the adrenaline was fading,

“I can help you, Mom.” Kaylee grabbed her by the hand and pulled her up on her feet. “I’m not going to school tomorrow, right?”

“Right. We’re going to have another day like we did today with learning at home but this time, we’re going to sleep a lot. Dad and Mom are both really sore and we need to rest, Kaylee. Do you think you can play quietly today?”

“I don’t know if I know how to play quietly,” she shivered like it was a personal affront to her nervous system. “Can I just sit in bed with you and watch movies?”
