Second Chance His Unending Love (Calista Hartwell) novel Chapter 44

Chapter 44

Everyone rushed back to the living room.

It turned out Miranda’s grandson and Austin had gotten into a fight.

The seven-year-old was in a mischievous phase, touching and poking at everything in sight. When he spotted Austin’s robot figurine, he fell in love instantly.

Austin was used to being the center of attention at home-no one had ever dared touch his things without permission.

Besides, this robot was a gift from Nicole; it meant something special to him!

At first, he tried to be patient, offering the boy a figurine Calista had bought him in exchange.

But the boy wasn’t stupid—the more Austin wanted it back, the tighter he clung to it.

In the tussle, the robot slipped from their hands and crashed to the floor, shattering into pieces.

Austin’s patience snapped. He shoved the little boy hard, sending him sprawling to the ground.

The boy froze for a second, then burst into tears, wailing at the top of his lungs from the floor.

“Who do you think you are? Your mom ran away—no one loves you anymore! Grandma said once your stepmom has a son, you’ll be nothing. Your dad will kick you out sooner or later!”

Austin was just as furious, shouting back, “That’s a lie! Nicole would never do that to me! Keep talking nonsense, and I’ll tear your mouth apart!”

The relatives swarmed over at the commotion. Chaos broke out.

Seeing Austin’s aggression, Miranda plopped down on the floor and screamed.

“Oh, you rich folks think you’re so high and mighty, huh? Bullying us poor relatives ’cause you’ve got money! My poor baby, are you okay? Grandma never should’ve brought you here!”

Miranda’s shrill voice made Austin’s head throb. He wanted to yell at them, to chase them all away.

He thought back to the many times relatives from his dad’s hometown had visited before. Nothing like this had ever happened.

His things had always been neatly arranged, and no one dared12

touch them without his say-so.

The house had always been clean and peaceful.

Now, the quiet villa was filled with such loud shouting that it felt like the ceiling would cave in.

Nicole was at her wits’ end. She pulled Austin aside in a hurry.

“What’s wrong with you? They’re guests! How could you hit a guest?”

Austin stared at her in shock, disbelief written all over his face. “Nicole, are you taking their side, too? He broke the robot you gave me!”

Nicole didn’t want to hear his excuses.

“It’s just a robot, no big deal. Can’t you let a little kid have his way? Do what I say, go apologize, and I’ll buy you a better one

next time.”

But her words fell on deaf ears. Austin stuck out his chin, his face bright red with anger.

“He broke my stuff! Why should I apologize?”

The little boy refused to back down. “Liar! You were the one who spatched it from me and made it fall!”

Nicole tried to reason with Austin again, but he kicked the broken robot to bits, his eyes teary with rage, and stormed back to his room.

When Killian got home, the house was in shambles.

Nicole had tried to calm everyone down, but nothing could soothe Miranda’s anger.

In the end, Killian had to talk her down and hand over a large sum of money to quiet her.

He couldn’t handle these people either. So, he arranged for them to be taken to a hotel overnight.

Even then, the relatives were far from happy.

“Couldn’t keep up the act anymore, huh? Refusing to let us stay -you’re just ashamed we’re poor!”

“That’s right! Success went to his head. He’ll crash and burn sooner or later!”

On the drive back to the villa, the atmosphere in the car was

tense and awkward.

Nicole threw up her hands in explanation. “Mr. Frost, I’m not exaggerating-they were impossible to please. Right, Austin?”

Austin was still fuming from the injustice. He spoke coldly, “None of this would’ve happened when my mom was here.”

Calista had never made him apologize without knowing the whole story or let him suffer such a huge wrong.

Nicole rolled her eyes. “That’s ’cause your mom knew them. I don’t know anything about them. Come on, be a man and let it go-it’s just a little thing.”

However, Austin turned his face away and said nothing more.

“Ugh, you…” Nicole huffed.

Killian was driving, and Nicole’s high-pitched voice grated on his nerves. “Enough. Be quiet.”

As the car passed the Kingston Hotel, Killian glanced up at the luxurious building instinctively.

The entire structure was lit up like a beacon. He wondered which room Calista was in.

Deep down, he blamed Calista for everything.

If she’d been home, none of this would’ve happened.

But now she was living it up in an expensive hotel, while he and
