Chapter 53
One day, when Killian returned to the villa, he spotted a maid carrying delicate pastries toward the backyard.
“Mr. Frost, your mother has brought some friends over,” the maid explained.
Killian paused. He’d had no desire to dea with such trivial matters.
However, since it was his own mother an he was already home, he figured he ough to make an appearance to save her face.
So, Killian turned and headed for the backyard.

In the pavilion, five elderly ladies around Stephanie’s age sat chatting and laughing.
Stephanie, seated in the center, held a coffee cup and adjusted her gossamer shawl with a smile. “The divorce
cooling-off period will be over soon. We can get the divorce certificate tomorrow,” she said, taking a small sip of coffee afterward.
She’d never liked the taste-bitter and
astringent.
But she saw coffee as a staple of city life, a symbol of status and prestige.
For years, Stephanie had held her nose and forced it down, putting on an air of 2:09

elegance that was a world away from the woman who’d wailed hysterically on the hospital floor just days before.
The four ladies exchanged glances.
“Why the divorce, after all these years?” one asked.
They’d visited Frost Manor before and knew Calista well.
Back then, Calista had always greeted them with a smile, making coffee and homemade pastries, attending to their needs with patience and thoughtfulness.
They’d had a good impression of her.

Yet Stephanie had always insisted on assigning Calista tasks that could easily have been done by the maids.
The more humble and obedient Calista was, the happier Stephanie became.
As ladies of wealthy families themselves, they’d long seen through Stephanie’s antics.
It was nothing more than putting down Calista to assert her own authority.
Wealthy families did have higher expectations for their heirs’ wives, but they never fixated on such trivialities, let alone bullied those women in front of
guests.

They understood that a son and his wife were a team, and the entire family rose and fell together.
No matter how brutal internal conflicts might be, they always presented a united front to the outside world.
By belittling Calista to such an extent, Stephanie was only dragging the Frost family’s reputation through the mud.
Stephanie let out a disdainful snort. “She’s ignorant and unruly, throwing tantrums whenever she pleases. She didn’t even care when her own son was sick. Why keep such a woman around?”

The ladies nodded and smiled, echoing her words perfunctorily.
“You’re right, divorce was the right choice.”
“Mr. Frost is young and accomplished-he can find anyone he wants.”
Stephanie’s eyes crinkled with delight. “You took the words right out of
my mouth, my dear. Killian has always been excellent-he was a campus heartthrob and top student in his youth. If his father’s illness hadn’t held him back back then, he would never have settled for
someone like Calista. Men hit their prime at forty; even divorced, he could easily find a young, unmarried girl.”

“Absolutely. The divorce was long overdue,” one lady agreed.
“This marriage has to end. Finally, be free from this misery!” another lady added.
Their tone implied that Calista was escaping a miserable situation.
None of them would let their own daughters marry into such a family, given its toxic dynamics.
Stephanie set down her coffee cup, chin raised with pride.
“Ladies, if you know any outstanding young women, keep Killian in mind. He

has a good temper, cares about his family, earns well, and is handsome-he’ll treat her right.”
It was shameless, trying to find her son a new wife before the divorce was even final.
“Does Austin approve of getting a new mother?” someone asked.
“My grandson can’t stand his mother anymore—he won’t even acknowledge her when they meet. He’s dying for a new mom,” Stephanie said.
An elderly lady in an indigo dress, who’d been quiet until now, spoke up with a look

“I heard Mr. Frost has a girl in her early twenties who’s been with him for over two
years.”
Her words subtly suggested that Killian had been having an affair for two years, making Calista’s decision to divorce completely justified.
Stephanie’s smile faltered, and she rolled her eyes.
“You mean her? Heh!” A sneer escaped her.
