Second Chance His Unending Love (Calista Hartwell) novel Chapter 6

Chapter 6 Old Wine Tastes Better

Calista turned around, and when she saw who it was, she froze.

Olivia let out a tiny gasp.

Whoa. What a handsome, stylish guy!

His abs showed through a beige silk V-neck shirt, and his well-tailored khaki pants hugged his long legs perfectly. He held the card in his right hand, while his left hand, adorned with a military-style watch, was casually tucked into his pocket.

He stood there looking effortlessly elegant and distinguished.

Olivia tilted her head.

Who’s this sharp, cool-looking man?

Calista’s embarrassment flashed across her face. “What are you doing here?”

Then she quickly recovered and handed the card back. “Mr. Hayes, thank you, but I don’t need it.”

Evander’s outstretched hand hung in the air for a few seconds before he gestured to the front desk.

“Comp their room. They can stay as long as they want.”

The staff member nodded. “Yes, Mr. Hayes.”

Calista frowned. “Evander, please don’t do this.”

Olivia’s mouth dropped open even wider.

Wait, Mom knows him? And he owns this hotel?

So he was the one who helped us when we checked in!

Evander caught all of Olivia’s dramatic reactions.

He asked, “Is this your daughter?”

Calista nodded. “Yes, this is my daughter, Olivia. Olivia, this is Mr. Hayes. He’s… an old friend of mine.”

Olivia grinned. “Nice to meet you, Mr. Hayes.”

Her curiosity got the best of her, and she added, “Mom, you’ve got such a hot friend, and you never told me about him?”

The best things, like fine wine, only got better with age. This guy was way more attractive than her dad.

Maybe this wasn’t the best time to run into him, or maybe she just didn’t want anyone to see her vulnerability, Calista looked away, considering if they should find another hotel.

Evander seemed to catch her thoughts and handed Olivia a business card. “Olivia, your mom’s father also owns part of this hotel, so you’re both safe here. I’m working in New York right now. If you need anything, just give me a call.”

His words were really meant for Calista, not Olivia. His tone was warm and sincere, but he kept a respectful distance.

Calista opened her mouth, about to turn him down.

Evander gave her a calm smile. “Sorry, I overheard your conversation earlier. When you’re going through a messy divorce, safety should be your biggest concern. This place is secure.”

He was absolutely right.

With someone important staying at the hotel, the security was top-notch.

Killian could control her financially, so he might use other ways to pressure her as well. He might even attempt to take Olivia away, leaving Calista with nothing.

Despite the awkwardness, Calista nodded in agreement.

But she wasn’t interested in lingering for small talk with Evander. She took Olivia’s hand and headed back to their room.

After they left, Connor rushed over to him. Seeing the usually stone-faced Evander dressed in such classy, refined clothes absolutely shocked him.

So Evander had ditched him first thing this morning and put on this whole attractive new outfit just to meet that mother and daughter?

Connor finally found his voice again. “Commander Hayes, could you please stop going off alone like this?”

Evander made a stop gesture with his hand. “When we’re off base, drop the title.”

“Yes, Mr. Hayes!”

Connor tried to reason with him. “You’re in a special position. We have to keep you completely safe. What if there are criminals…”

Evander glanced at his watch. His well-defined arm showed prominent veins and looked like it was carved from stone.

He said flatly, “The criminals are the ones you should worry about.”

Connor was speechless.

That was actually true. Evander had fought his way to the top commander position among elite special forces soldiers through real combat and hard-earned skill. He could probably take out ten guys with one hand.

Evander was in a good mood and started giving orders as he walked. “Pull back half the guards. I’m gonna be staying here regularly for a while. Don’t bother me unless it’s important.”

“Yes, sir!”
