Second Chance His Unending Love (Calista Hartwell) novel Chapter 95

Chapter 95

Connor drove straight for the military compound.

The road leading in was broad and arrow-straight, cutting through the night toward the solemn, heavily guarded gates. Armed sentries snapped crisp salutes on both sides as the security barrier lifted automatically.

Connor returned the salute before easing the car farther

inside.

The compound stretched deep. Towering plane trees lined the avenue, standing tall and disciplined like soldiers at attention.

Rows of neat, elegant residential buildings appeared, each surrounded by well-manicured lawns, exuding an air of quiet authority.

Olivia’s mouth dropped open in amazement, her eyes wide as she took in her surroundings. “Mr. Hayes, this is the military compound? Do you live here?”

Evander nodded, a faint smile on his face. “Yes.”

But Calista’s expression shifted to one of unease, and she quickly shook her head. “Evander, this isn’t appropriate. We shouldn’t be coming in here. I don’t want to cause you

trouble.”

Military compounds were tightly controlled, accessible only to those who served there or their immediate family.

Evander had already done so much for her; she hated to impose further, especially in such a sensitive place.

However, Evander reassured her, “It’s fine. I’ll file a formal report first thing tomorrow. From now on, you and Olivia can come anytime-think of this as your safe haven. No one will dare bother you here.”

He spoke casually, but his eyes betrayed his true feelings -longing, hope, a quiet desire to build a future where she and Olivia were part of his life.

Connor glanced at Evander in the rearview mirror, stifling a grin.

So the fearsome, decisive major general-known for his cold, unyielding demeanor on the battlefield-could also be so obvious in his affection.

What report? Just submit a marriage application already.

Calista felt a twinge of unease, mixed with a strange sense

of comfort.

Staying overnight at another man’s house with her daughter felt inappropriate, but the sight of the fluttering military flags, the uniformed guards, and the quiet solemnity of the compound eased her worries.

Olivia, ever the curious child, tilted her head in confusion.

“Mr. Hayes, if you have a place to live in New York, why did you stay at the Kingston Hotel before?

Connor screamed inwardly, “Obviously for you and your

mom!”

Evander, however, remained calm, his tone casual. “The house was too quiet, too empty. The hotel felt more… lively.”

The car continued onward, winding through the compound until it reached the deepest, most secluded

section. It came to a stop in front of a two-story detached villa.

Calista’s expression remained neutral, but she was shocked.

What rank did Evander hold to be entitled to such a luxurious residence in the military compound?

A warm light glowed in the living room window.

Through the sheer curtains, she spotted the silhouette of a woman with a ponytail, moving about inside.

Her steps faltered, and she stepped back slightly, uncertainty creeping in. “You… have someone here?” she asked, her voice quieter than usual.

In fact, Calista knew so little about Evander’s personal life—beyond his parents, she had no idea who was in his

circle.

She felt awkward intruding, worried she’d disrupt his private life.

Evander chuckled, the sound warm and reassuring. 15:47 4/8

“Did you think it was someone special?”

He placed his hands gently on her shoulders, guiding her toward the front door with a gentle push. “Don’t worry- come inside. You’ll see.”

Forgotten at the door, Connor leaned against the car and counted silently.

Evander had smiled more tonight than in all the years Connor had served under him. He couldn’t wait to text

his comrades.

Evander led Calista and Olivia into the villa.

The interior was decorated in a traditional classical style -dark wood furniture, rich silk curtains, and subtle artwork adorning the walls—exuding an air of stability and solemnity.

As he’d said, it was eerily quiet.

All the furniture and belongings were spotless, neatly arranged, with no signs of regular use.

The shoe cabinet by the door was empty except for a few pairs of brand-new guest slippers.

Other than the floor lamp glowing softly in the living

room, the place looked almost uninhabited—as if Evander rarely spent time here.

“Mr. Hayes, you’re back?” a warm voice called out.

An elderly woman emerged from the kitchen, her silver hair tied back in a neat ponytail, a rag in her hand as if she’d been cleaning.

Her face lit up with surprise and delight when she saw Evander, then turned to Calista and Olivia, her eyes softening with curiosity.

Evander introduced them, his tone warm, “This is Alisa Wayne, the mother of one of my comrades. She had nowhere to go, so I let her stay here to help with chores. Alisa, this is Calista Hartwell and Olivia Frost-very important people to me.”

Calista forced a smile, her cheeks flushing slightly.

It seemed that Evander never missed a chance to
