Chapter 181 Let It Hurt
Finished
Quinn wrung out a warm washcloth and gently wiped Lucy’s face, her voice soft but firm. “Next time, pace yourself, okay? You can’t keep drinking like that.”
Lucy, who had been half out of it, suddenly lit up again like she’d caught a second wind.
She grabbed Quinn’s hand, her words slurring just enough to give her away. “Quinn… you know what, you’d seriously be perfect for Julian…
Quinn paused for a second.
She knew this wasn’t something Lucy would ever say if she were sober.
“You’re drunk, Lucy. Just go to sleep,” Quinn said quietly.
“I’m not drunk,” Lucy shot back immediately, stubborn and completely unconvincing.
Like everyone who was drunk, she was fully committed to denying it.
Out of nowhere, she pushed herself upright. “Wait, where’s Julian?”
Quinn quickly steadied her before she tipped over. “Hey, easy. Lie back down.”
“I need to call him,” Lucy mumbled, already digging through the blankets. “Where’s my phone?”
Quinn sighed softly and switched tactics, her tone turning gently reassuring. “He already went home. He told you to get some sleep too.”
Lucy blinked, trying to process that. “Oh… really?”
That did it.
She dropped back onto the pillow and obediently shut her
eyes.
“I’m going to sleep then… I don’t want him getting on my case… he’s intense when he’s mad… I just said a couple things about Clara and he already got annoyed… whatever…”
Her voice trailed off as she drifted into sleep.
Quinn stayed sitting there, not moving.
3
Her mind felt strangely empty, like everything inside her had gone quiet all at once.
Then suddenly, something warm hit the back of her hand.
A tear.
She froze, then quickly lifted her hand and wiped her eyes.
Don’t cry.

It’s not going to be easy, you already know that. It’s going to be messy, unpredictable, probably painful.
But you can handle it.
Even if no one chooses you, you still choose yourself.
There’s only one Quinn in this world. That has to be enough.

Lucy woke up the next morning because her bladder forced her out of bed.
She stumbled into the bathroom, still groggy, splashed cold water on her face, and finally started to come back to life.
Most of last night was gone.
She couldn’t even remember how she got home.
When she stepped out, she saw Quinn curled up on the couch, sketchbook on her knees, pencil moving steadily across the page.
“Already working?” Lucy said, yawning as she dropped onto the other end of the couch. “Did you eat anything?”
Quinn set the sketchbook aside and looked over. “You’re up. How do you feel? Any headache or nausea? I can make you toast. I brewed some fruit tea too, it’ll help.”
Lucy waved her off, slumping into the cushions. “I’m not hungry. My stomach’s not feeling it.”
“You drank way too much,” Quinn said as she poured her a cup and handed it over. “Start with this.”
Lucy took it and leaned back. “Hey, that design competition you entered, the first round results drop soon, right?”
Quinn nodded. “This afternoon.”
“Wait, today?” Lucy straightened up instantly. “You’re definitely moving on, no question.”
Quinn smiled, a little more relaxed. “I hope so.”
From that moment on, Lucy was more invested than Quinn.
୮
Every few minutes, she refreshed the competition page, like she could will the results to appear faster.
Finally, sometime after four, the page updated.
Lucy froze for half a second, then exploded.
“Quinn, you’re on the list, you made it to the next round!”
She nearly jumped off the couch.
Quinn felt it too, that quiet rush of relief.

Au international competition like this wasn’t easy to get through.
She exhaled slowly.
So this works… my direction wasn’t wrong.
“Okay, this calls for a celebration,” Lucy said, already grabbing her arm. “Get up, I’m taking you out.”
“I’m paying.” Quinn said immediately. “If you’re paying, I’m not going.”
Lucy groaned. “Fine. You cover food, I’ve got drinks. Deal. And don’t argue, this is a big deal, we’re celebrating properly.”
Quinn didn’t push back.
They changed, grabbed their bags, and headed out.
Neither of them was really hungry, so Lucy took her to a quiet cocktail bar a friend of hers ran.
It was early enough that the place was calm, low lights, soft music, not crowded.
Perfect for just sitting and talking.
“The bartender here’s legit,” Lucy said, sliding the menu over. “You have to try something.”
Quinn hesitated for a second.
She had sworn off drinking after last time.
But that had been about not embarrassing herself in front of Julian.
Now…
That wasn’t even a concern anymore. And honestly, she wanted something to take the edge off.
The two of them leaned in, heads close together, quietly debating what to order.

When the drinks arrived, they were stunning, layered colors, clean presentation, the kind of cocktails that looked like art.
Even before tasting them, they lifted your mood. They talked, laughed, and kept ordering.
One turned into two, then three.
Even if the alcohol wasn’t strong, it added up.
“Hey, slow down,” Lucy said, watching her. “You’re going to regret this.”
Quinn looked at her, eyes soft, a little unfocused. “You were a mess last night. Let me have tonight. If I get drunk, you just take me home.”
Lucy paused.
