Chapter 192 No Way Out
But still…
Quinn lowered her gaze, her voice softer now. “I really do appreciate it. I mean that. But this isn’t appropriate. We’re not…”
Julian cut in, his voice sharper now. “Last night, you were all over me. You were touching me, kissing me, holding onto me. Didn’t seem like you cared about what was appropriate then. So what is this now, different rules for you and me?”
Quinn felt like she might actually disappear from sheer embarrassment.
Her face burned so badly it almost hurt.
“I really don’t remember,” she said, her voice lacking any confidence. “I don’t have any memory of it.”
Julian’s expression didn’t change. “So if you don’t remember, it just didn’t happen? You think I’d lie about something like that?”
“I… I don’t know how to respond to that,” Quinn admitted, completely flustered. “I’m sorry, okay? I’ll apologize. But can you let go first?”
Her ankle was still in his hand.
Julian didn’t move. “If I let go, your feet are going to get cold again. The doctor said your circulation isn’t great right now, and you could feel worse if you don’t stay warm.”
“I’m fine,” Quinn said quickly, still avoiding his eyes. Really, just let go.”
Julian studied her for a moment. “You really don’t remember anything?”
For a split second, Quinn hesitated.
Fragments of the night had started coming back after the surgery, blurry but enough to make her want to disappear.
Her hands on him.
Her body pressed against his.
I cannot admit that. Absolutely not.
She shook her head firmly. “I don’t remember.”

Julian’s fingers tightened slightly around her ankle, just enough to make his point. “Alright. I’ll fix that.”
Quinn’s eyes widened. “What does that even mean?”
But Julian didn’t answer. He shifted instead. “How are you feeling? Any pain?”
Of course she was in pain.

But standing in front of him like this, she didn’t want to admit anything.
She changed the subject. “Where’s Lucy?”
“I sent her home,” Julian said.
That made sense. Quinn didn’t want to rely on Lucy anyway. But Julian clearly wasn’t planning to leave.
She forced herself to speak. “Can you call a nurse? I want to hire someone to help.”
Julian looked at her. “Why?”
“It’ll be easier,” Quinn said. “I won’t have to bother anyone.”
“You’re not hiring anyone,” Julian replied, calm but firm. “I’ll take care of you.”
Quinn stiffened immediately. “That’s not appropriate. We’re not close like that.”
Julian’s gaze held hers. “Not close? But you can kiss me, touch me, hold onto me whenever you feel like it?”
“Stop,” she said quickly, mortified.
Julian didn’t let it go. He couldn’t.

The frustration had been building since the night before.
“You did all of that,” he said evenly. “So why is it suddenly off-limits for me?”
Quinn wanted to hide under the blanket and never come out.
“All I can say is I’m sorry,” she said.
She knew he wasn’t lying. Which meant everything he said was true.
And worse than before.
Why do I turn into a completely different person when I drink?
If she had been sober, none of this would have happened.
And somehow, every time… It was him.
I am never drinking again. Ever.
Julian’s tone softened slightly, but only slightly. “I don’t force people. If you don’t agree, I won’t touch you, hold you, or kiss you.”
Quinn finally relaxed just a little.
But then he added, like it was already decided, “I’ll be taking care of you.”
Her head snapped up. “You just said you wouldn’t force me.”
