They had never been Angeline's friends.

After all, Angeline's status was now different from theirs. She towered above all of them.
If they were going to make an effective connection with Angeline, using the fact that they had grown up together, or using Ned and Fletcher Corporation, would give them an opportunity. They wouldn't have to humble or lower themselves either. It was the easiest way to succeed.
They were all adults now, and their friendships were no longer as pure as they had been in childhood. It was now just a tool for them to gain profits for their companies.
