Eloise's whole body went stiff, but once she recognized the voice, her tense muscles relaxed a little.
She hurriedly pushed herself out of his embrace.
When she turned around, she found herself looking straight into Victor's red, swollen but burning eyes.
Those eyes were overflowing with intense anticipation, and that look of barely contained excitement about getting a surprise made Eloise's stomach turn all over again.
But then, thinking about how disappointed Victor would be when his hopes were crushed, she couldn't help smiling just a little.
She followed Victor through the gate. The moment she stepped inside, Eloise caught sight of a figure standing in the gap between the curtains at the second-floor window.
The brief relief she'd felt over the past two days instantly vanished, replaced by a sense of dread, heavy and suffocating.
She'd spent all that time mentally preparing herself for this. But the second she stepped through the door, she almost lost it.
If she could, she'd move out today. Right now. The sooner the better.
But soon enough. Just six more days, and she'd be free of this suffocating, nauseating relationship. Six more days, and she'd never have to see these two people again for the rest of her life.
Victor noticed how distant Eloise had become. The heat in his gaze gradually cooled.
He followed behind her and watched as she calmly changed her shoes, carried her bag upstairs, and came back down for dinner.
Everything looked normal on the surface, just like always. But somehow, he couldn't feel her heart beating for him anymore.
So where's my birthday surprise?
When exactly is she planning to give it to me?
"Eloise!" Beatrice called out with her usual innocent cheerfulness and threw herself straight into Eloise's arms the moment she reached the bottom of the stairs. "Mommy said you went to the Rockies! Did you bring back any pretty flowers?"
Eloise's brows furrowed so slightly it was almost invisible.
This little girl throwing herself at her didn't inspire any affection anymore. All she felt was like someone had stuck a piece of gum on her that she couldn't shake off, clingy and impossible to push away.
Victor seized on Beatrice's words, his voice heavy with barely concealed probing. "You actually went to the Rockies?"
That mischievous streak in Eloise sparked to life instantly. She rubbed her throat gently, feeling how tight it had gotten from the allergic reaction, and her voice came out hoarse. "The Rockies aren't exactly an easy climb."
Victor's tense expression crumbled all at once. His eyes locked onto Eloise. "How could you be so reckless? Going all that way just for my birthday. Don't ever do something that dangerous again, okay?"
Even as he said this, his eyes were already darting eagerly toward her luggage.
