Laurence stared at Stuart for a moment before saying gently, "It's been hard on you. I'll ask Manny about this. From now on, anyone who wants to take something from this residence must ask me or Noelle first.

"They can only take anything away once we've given our approval."

Thinking he had managed to fool Laurence, Stuart quickly replied, "Yes, Mr. Laurence. I'll do as you say from now on."

Laurence nodded and turned to Noelle. "Let's go, Noelle."

He reached out to help carry the stack of books before turning back to Stuart. "I'll take these home and look through them. I'll come to you if I find any problems."

"Of course. Please come to me whenever you need anything, sir."

Stuart respectfully saw Laurence and Noelle out. He watched Laurence get into the car and waited until it had driven away before finally letting out a sigh of relief.

"That nearly gave me a heart attack. I thought Laurence was going to make an example out of me."

He wiped the cold sweat from his forehead and muttered to himself as he walked back inside.

Fortunately, Laurence had only taken the ledgers and did not do anything else. There were indeed problems with the books, but there were so many of them, and Laurence was not familiar with the family affairs. Could he really spot the discrepancies?
