Chapter 42
Eliza hadn’t expected Calvin to speak so harshly, especially in front of Josh.
A surge of frustration bubbled up in her chest.
Again, he was bringing up the rules of Everest. Always reminding her of them!
Of course, the only one who was always bound by the rules was her.
Just as the tension seemed about to escalate, the end–of–work bell rang.
Without hesitation, Eliza handed her resignation letter to Calvin. “It’s off–duty now, so I guess I don’t have to follow Everest’s rules anymore, right, Mr. Young?”
She turned and started packing up her things at her desk, no longer bothering to look at his face.
Calvin’s face was clearly not happy. He stood frozen, his expression cold.
Josh, noticing the resignation letter in Calvin’s hand, commented, “Calv, from what I know, Eliza already submitted her resignation to you. Why haven’t you approved it yet?”
Calvin, putting away the letter, showed no expression, and his presence felt heavy and oppressive. “This is Everest’s business,” he said flatly. “It has nothing to do with you.”
Josh smiled lightly. “Of course, I wouldn’t interfere with your company’s internal matters.”
Calvin’s tone remained indifferent. “That’s for the best.”
Josh kept smiling, but there was no warmth in his eyes. “As a friend, I just want to remind you: if she really wants to leave, you won’t be able to keep her.”
The day of the Unite banquet, Eliza arrived a little later than expected due to traffic.
Josh, the guest of honor, was busy socializing and couldn’t personally meet her at the door. Eliza told him she could manage on her own and would enter once she arrived.
But she didn’t expect to run into Gideon and Medea at the entrance of the banquet hall.
Gideon was there to escort Medea in, and he hadn’t expected to see Eliza.
“Why is it always you?” Gideon sneered as soon as he saw her.
With no one else around, he didn’t hide his disdain for Eliza.
“Like a fly, always showing up wherever there’s a smell,” he mocked.
In the past, Eliza had endured Gideon’s sarcasm because of her relationship with Calvin. But now, she no longer cared about that connection.
She wasn’t obligated to put up with his attitude anymore.
“I’m here because I can smell the stink, and maybe you should think about why you reek?” Eliza shot back, not holding back.

Gideon was taken aback. He didn’t expect her to respond and, for a few seconds, looked both stunned and angry. “Eliza, what are you so proud of? What makes you think you have the right to act like this? Weren’t you supposed to resign? Why are you still here at Everest, shamelessly
staying?”
“Such hypocrisy. Who are you trying to impress with this act?”
“Instead of mocking me, why not go and convince Calvin to approve my resignation? Let’s see who’s really too thick–skinned to leave!”
She didn’t need to go all out with Gideon, who was prone to speaking without thinking.
Gideon almost exploded with rage.
Before he could say anything more, Medea arrived.
His face immediately changed, and he hurried to open the door for Medea. “Medea, you’ve finally arrived! I’ve been waiting for you forever!”
His demeanor completely shifted, as if he had a wagging tail behind him.
Medea was still dressed to perfection, smiling brightly as she greeted Gideon. “Sorry, I got delayed on the road.”
When she got out of the car and saw Eliza, she seemed surprised.
Thinking about how close Eliza and Josh had become recently, Medea assumed Eliza must have come for the connections and resources at Unite.
She glanced away, a slight smirk appearing on her lips as she continued speaking to Gideon.
Just then, Josh called Eliza, and after picking up, she went inside.
.Medea asked Josh, “Why did she come? Was she invited by Unite?”
Gideon scoffed. “Of course not! I don’t know how she got an invitation, but Eliza is shrewd. She’s definitely here for the resources.”
Medea had already assumed this, and hearing Gideon confirm it made her even more certain.
“People like her, who climb up from the bottom, won’t miss any opportunity. If she misses it, she probably knows she won’t get another chance.”
Gideon, still annoyed by Eliza’s earlier comeback, didn’t want to talk about her. “Forget her, she’s like a ghost, always lingering around. If I were
Calvin, I’d just fire her!”
“Calvin is fair, and unless Eliza did something wrong, he won’t fire her,” Medea responded calmly.
Gideon mumbled, “That’s the problem with Calvin. He’s too upright. That’s why people like Eliza can take advantage of him!”
“Alright, stop talking about her. Has Josh brought a date?” Medea was more interested in this question.
Gideon immediately shook his head. “No, he doesn’t have anyone. If he wore to bring someone, it would only be you. You’re the only one who would stand out!”
Medea ‘s smile deepened. “Let’s go in. I brought a gift for Josh to celebrate his new position.”
As they entered, Josh was talking with Eliza.
Medea confidently approached and greeted Josh, “Joshi, congratulations! I brought a gift for you. I hope you achieve even greater success at
Unite!”
“Thank you.” Josh accepted the gift and passed it to an assistant, not bothering to even open it.

Medea had expected him to be more enthusiastic. She felt her gaze grow colder. “Josh, aren’t you going to open it?”
“It’s a bit busy now. I’ll open it later,” Josh replied smoothly.
Medea, relieved by his explanation, relaxed again. “It’s something I know you’ll like. I’ve remembered your preferences.”
Her words carried a hidden meaning, showing off their bond without crossing any lines. Everything was perfectly controlled.
