Chapter 43
When Calvin greeted Josh, Eliza followed closely by Josh’s side. Eliza subconsciously felt guilty, gripping Josh’s arm tightly, too afraid to meet Calvin’s gaze.
But soon, she realized she was overthinking.
Calvin didn’t care who her companion was, not even glancing at her.
After exchanging pleasantries with Josh, he went off to find Medea.
Eliza felt frustrated with herself. She still faltered whenever Calvin appeared.
Yet, she reassured herself that letting go was not something that could happen all at once. It had to be gradual. At least she was doing well now.
Calvin’s presence made Medea regain her confidence.
Throughout the event, she never let go of Calvin’s arm. Calvin, being a rising star in the capital circle, and one of Washington’s most sought–after financial elites, was the center of attention wherever he went.
Naturally, Medea attracted a lot of attention as well.
As Eliza stepped out of the restroom, she overheard a conversation about Medea ‘s identity.
“That Ms. Wynn next to Calvin, who is she? He seems very protective of her. Their relationship doesn’t seem ordinary.”
“Don’t you know? She’s most likely Calvin’s potential marriage partner, the daughter of Caesar.”
The other person must have known Caesar, so they continued, “Caesar’s development has been good these past couple of years, but there’s still a big gap between him and the Young family.”
Caesar had been working out of town for many years and only returned to Washington a year ago, and even then, it was just a lateral transfer. To the average person, Caesar might seem to hold a high position, but he still didn’t measure up to the standards of a big family.
“Anyone who has Calvin personally backing and guiding them, introducing them to important connections, must mean one thing–he’s serious about this Ms. Wynn. She’s not just a little plaything he keeps around for fun.”
“It seems like we should start networking with Wynn’s department more often.”
After all, with Calvin backing her, the Wynn family was on the verge of great success. The earlier they ingratiated themselves, the better, or else they might miss their chance.
The group hurried to flatter Calvin and Medea, but Eliza stood frozen in place, unable to snap out of her thoughts.
She remembered the conversation she overheard outside the VIP room that day. Gideon had said:
“If you really like her, then you can keep her around after marriage.”
So, was she just another little plaything Calvin kept around for his pleasure?
Was that why Calvin kept delaying her resignation? He wasn’t done with her yet?
Just like Gideon had said, even if he married someone else, he could still keep her.

Chapter 43
Just like before, he would call on her whenever he felt like it, treating her however he pleased.
At that moment, it felt as though her body was encased in ice, a chill running through her.
The past seven years felt like nothing more than a joke.
“Eliza! Long time no see!”
Camille’s sudden appearance snapped Eliza out of her frozen thoughts.
“Ms. Moore.”
“Why are your hands so cold?” Camille was startled by her icy hands.
“I probably just came in from outside,” Eliza casually explained.
Camille took her to a warmer spot and chatted with her about how she had been doing. Upon hearing that Eliza hadn’t yet resigned from
Everest, his brow furrowed.
“What is Calvin trying to do? He’s not giving you the treatment or position you deserve, but he won’t let you go either. That’s too low!” Camille
said.
Eliza didn’t want to discuss these unpleasant matters. Instead, she shifted the conversation to the AI project.
Camille became very interested and chatted with her for a long time about it.
This project had always been something Eliza had been closely following, and she was one of the few who understood it well, second only to
Enzo.
Her analysis and evaluations were all very professional.
Camille couldn’t help but ask, “Were you studying computer science before?”
Eliza shook her head, denying it.
“I thought you spoke so professionally, I assumed you were from that field.”
“Before taking on a project, I like to get a comprehensive understanding and analysis of it, so I know which ones are worth investing in, which need to be monitored, and which should be abandoned. So I know more about it than most people, but I’m not really a professional,” Eliza explained.
Camille, already fond of Eliza, was impressed by her professionalism and immediately made up his mind, “This project, I’m investing in it!”
“We haven’t even discussed the specifics yet…” Eliza was taken aback.
“No need! I trust your judgment!” Camille said, giving her his unconditional trust.
Eliza was touched. “Then let’s schedule a time to discuss the detalls.”
“Anytime! I’m in Washington this week, just reach out to me whenever.”
Just as Eliza was about to toast with Camille, a sharp and sarcastic voice interrupted.
It was Gideon.
“Some people are just ungrateful wolves, eating from the inside while trying to bring in projects for other companies.”

Chapter 43
“You shouldn’t say that about Secretary Grant,” Medea seemed to defend Eliza.
But Gideon didn’t name anyone directly, and by saying that, Medea had effectively confirmed the accusation.
“I’m not wrong. She’s still at Everest, but already starting to eat from the inside and introduce projects to other companies. Who knows, maybe she’s been doing insider trading. I suggest Calv thoroughly investigates!” Gideon was upset.
Medea looked at Eliza helplessly. “Secretary Grant, I think you should explain things to Calvin properly. After all, you’re still with Everest.”
Before Eliza could speak, Calvin walked over.
“What’s there to explain?”
Calvin’s voice was cold as he glanced at Eliza, his demeanor indifferent.
Medea explained, “Gideon heard that Secretary Grant was introducing projects to others and just wanted to remind her that she’s still at Everest. It’s not very appropriate, and if any confidential projects from Everest get leaked, it’ll cause trouble.”
Calvin didn’t speak, his deep eyes half–closed, exuding a chilling aura.
Camille couldn’t stand it anymore and was about to speak up for Eliza.
Eliza stopped him, her expression calm as she spoke, “Director Wynn, you’re overthinking it. The project I discussed with Ms. Moore is one that you’ve already rejected. I felt sorry for the project team, so I was trying to find them new investors. It’s not about any personal gain, and there’s nothing inappropriate about it.”
She then turned to look at Calvin, meeting his gaze with a calm defiance, not backing down.
“I’ve been with Everest for all these years, and no one knows my character better than you, Calvin. If you really have concerns, why don’t you just approve my resignation request sooner, so that Director Wynn doesn’t have to worry on your behalf?”
Gideon was stunned. He never thought Eliza would confront Calvin so openly, especially in such a public setting. It was something that had never happened before.
Always quick to mock Eliza, he couldn’t find any words to retort.
Even Medea was momentarily stunned by Eliza’s attitude.
Her original intention had been to make Calvin dislike Eliza. But she never expected Eliza to be so resolute.
The atmosphere grew tense.
Just as Eliza thought Calvin would ignore her or brush off her resignation like he always had, he finally gave an answer.
Calvin spoke calmly, “Fine, come in on Monday to complete the resignation procedures.”
