Shadows Between Us (Stella and Sebastian) novel Chapter 167

Chapter 167

With a cold lift of his hand, Sebastian made the three who were still fighting freeze instantly.

Sebastian picked up the phone, his presence icy and intimidating, eyes sharp, voice deep and cold. He replied, “Got it.”

With that, he hung up.

The whole restaurant went dead quiet.

He didn’t say a word, his eyes downcast, absently rolling the black prayer beads between his fingers.

The morning sun hit him, but it couldn’t chase away the shadows clinging to him. There was a heaviness in the air that no one could put into words.

Sebastian looked at Lucas and said, “Lucas, your great-grandma is awake. Go get changed.”

Lucas’s eyes lit up instantly.

He jumped off his chair and dashed upstairs.

Stella picked up on something more behind Sebastian’s frosty face. As soon as Lucas disappeared upstairs, an icy chill swept through the room.

“Allan, have all the lawyers from Harmony Law Firm ready and meet me at the hospital,” Sebastian said, his tone cold and detached.

Allan was taken aback for a second, then stood up with a serious look. He replied, “Got it.”

“Stella, let’s go to the hospital,” Sebastian said. He was trying hard not to let his darker side show in front of Stella.

Stella shot him a look, her gaze drifting over the cut on his lips. She replied with a slow “mm,” not saying much, but her mind was already racing.

Fifteen minutes later, the black Maybach rolled off the island.

Several black Mercedes-Benz vans were right on its tail.

Inside the car, Lucas, carrying his beloved shark bag, was clearly in high spirits. His little feet swayed back and forth as he hummed happily to himself.

Today, Stella wore a classic sleeveless black dress. Her long, softly curled hair was half tied up, and a black diamond snake hairpin glinted just behind her car. The matching bracelet hugged her pale wrist.

Serpentina designed them, and Razorstrike crafted them by hand.

Black diamonds radiated against the glowing skin, simply stunning.

Suddenly, Stella’s phone buzzed with a new message.

It read: [Stella, I’m in Clusia. If you want to go on a shopping spree, just send me your wishlist.]

Stella thought, ‘What is he doing here?’

She replied with a simple question mark.

That’s just how she was. If a single question mark got the point across, she wouldn’t waste time typing anything else.

The other party texted: [Do you know the Gray family in Haliville?]

But before Stella could even reply, the other party was already off, chattering away.

He texted: [Never mind, you definitely don’t know them. They’re total nobodies; someone of your caliber wouldn’t even bother with them. Anyway, here’s the deal.]

Stella’s frown kept deepening the more she read.

Suddenly, she ordered, “John, pull over.”

John slammed on the brakes and pulled over onto the emergency lane.

The line of black Mercedes vans behind them also screeched to a halt.

Lucas blinked, puzzled.

Sebastian glanced up, his gaze settling on Stella, whose brows were drawn with a sharp, steely edge.

Her beautiful face was unreadable, and when their eyes met, she spoke with a casual coolness, “Let’s hit the mall first. I want to pick out a gift for Mrs. Gray.”

Sebastian gave her a long, searching look.

He could already sense what was coming.

He thought, ‘She knows.’

“Drive,” Stella ordered.

John didn’t waste a second. He started the car and changed course, heading straight for the nearest upscale shopping center.

By the time they finally arrived at the hospital, half an hour had already slipped by.

The Gray family and Sebastian had both received the news that Annette was awake almost at the same time, but when Sebastian and Stella arrived, the hallway outside the hospital room was completely empty.

Allan had arrived ahead of them, leading a team of elite lawyers from Harmony Law Firm. All of them were in tailored suits, faces serious.

When Sebastian showed up, they greeted him respectfully and in unison, “Mr. Gray.”

Allan, wearing gold-rimmed glasses, adjusted them with one hand and gave Sebastian a subtle shake of his

head.

The Gray family still hadn’t shown up.

Lucas hugged his little shark toy, the one he was planning to give to Annette. He was totally oblivious to all the drama swirling around him; he was just happy as could be.

Allan glanced at the bag Stella was holding, a bit surprised. He asked, “Stella, what’s that?”

Before Stella could answer, her phone buzzed again.

She glanced at the screen and said coolly, “The Grays just left their place.”

Allan was at a loss for words.

He thought, ‘How does Stella know that?’

Just then, Allan’s phone lit up with a call.

After the call ended, a strange look flashed across Allan’s face.

He thought, ‘Stella was right; they really did leave.’

“Time’s tight. I’ll go in and help Annette freshen up. You guys wait out here,” Stella said, her tone cool. But anyone who really knew her could tell she was holding back her anger.

“Alright,” Sebastian replied. The classic black luxury suit he wore seemed to swallow up all the shadows around him.

Stella pushed the door open and walked in.

Lucas made a move to follow Stella, but Sebastian held him back by the scruff of his neck.

“Wait,” Sebastian said.

Lucas puffed up like an angry little pufferfish.

Time ticked by, second after second.

Half an hour later, there was a commotion at the elevator.

Carlos came in with Sophia and Richard in tow, but the real showstopper was an elegant old gentleman with blond hair and blue eyes, his platinum cufflinks sparkling with diamonds.

There was also an elder being ushered along by the crowd, carrying a thick family record book.

When Allan caught sight of the blond gentleman, his brows furrowed, and he placed a hand on Sebastian’s wheelchair.

The old man, who had looked so proud just moments ago, suddenly stiffened the instant he saw Sebastian sitting there.

He was cursing up a storm in his head.

Carlos thumped his cane on the floor as he rushed over to Sebastian. He demanded, “Where’s that Stella? Tell her to get her ass out here!”

Sophia kept patting his back, trying to calm him down, her eyes red from crying. She said, “Don’t make yourself sick over this.”

Lucas shrank back, cowering at the sudden shouting.

Sebastian called out, “John.”

The hallway was already lined with a wall of black-suited bodyguards, holding Carlos back at arm’s length.

Sebastian looked up, fury simmering in the depths of his eyes.

Carlos said, “Stella made Lauren suffer so much.” He was so mad that his blood pressure was about to explode.

Just yesterday, the Lane family came to talk about marriage, but Lauren was kicking and screaming, refusing. And honestly, Carlos didn’t want it either!

But John just handed David’s medical report over.
