Shadows Between Us (Stella and Sebastian) novel Chapter 202

Chapter 202

He thought, ‘He wants to kill me?’

:

Standing in the shadows, Ivan swallowed hard and shook his head frantically.

Not feeling sincere enough, he flashed all eight of his teeth in a forced grin.

His grin was all teeth, no warmth.

Ivan let off a strange laugh sound.

Blackie was speechless.

‘This freaking dumbass,’ Blackie thought.

With a swish, the furious Blackie shot forward and smacked Ivan hard with the tip of his tail.

Ivan said, “Ow, that stings.”

Ivan clapped a hand over his face.

Everyone stood there, dumbstruck.

And then, total mayhem broke out.

A moment later, blackie lay sprawled on Ivan’s shoulder, choking back sobs, its beady eyes full of hurt.

Blackie’s mouth kept opening and closing.

Sebastian gave Big Ben a blank stare and said, “Translate.”

Big Ben switched into translator mode, hands on his hips. He said, “Ever since I came to this family, I’ve been nothing but loyal and hardworking.”

Then he jabbed a finger at Ivan, still lurking in the shadows. He said, “I’m in love with this dumbass, but this dumbass is busy knitting sweaters for other cats?”

Big Ben’s chubby little finger pointed straight at the six cats.

The cats looked totally innocent, all tilting their heads in unison.

Stella asked, “Knitting sweaters?”

Her voice went up at the end, sounding a little confused.

Ivan said nothing either.

From the shadows, he quietly pulled out a ball of pink yarn and a half-finished cat sweater.

Ivan laughed awkwardly.

He kept knitting away while laughing.

Everyone stood there, dumbstruck.

Stella gave the yarn a long, complicated look. So it was Ivan who’d been making Snowball’s leash and all those ridiculous little hats; finally, the mystery was solved.

The six cats pushed their cat food cans over to Blackie.

And they all meowed at Blackie, as if saying, “Kitties were hungry. Cans.”

Blackie hissed.

Big Ben, putting on a dramatic voice, said, “Ugh, you’re driving me crazy.”

Just when everyone thought Blackie was about to lose it and smack the cats, he zipped over to the cans and, with a series of quick flicks of his tail, started popping them open.

He was clearly a pro at this.

Everyone was surprised.

In the shadows, Ivan’s eyes welled up with fatherly tears.

‘Ugh, this is just too heartwarming,’ he thought, sniffling.

After opening the last can, Blackie was utterly defeated, buried under a pile of six fluffy cats, getting licked so much his scales were about to get polished off.

He collapsed on the floor, not moving an inch.

Lucas came running over, his footsteps quick and lively. He crouched down, grabbed a little twig from the ground, and gave Blackie a poke.

Blackie was speechless.

“Those cats licked me, Blackie thought.

Lucas gave him another poke.

Blackie thought, ‘I’m doomed,’ feeling utterly defeated.

Just a step away, Ivan, still lurking in the shadows, quickly shoved the half-knitted cat sweater back into his jacket. Then he pulled out a little yellow honey bear hoodie from his pocket and slyly placed it beside Blackie.

Ivan laughed again.

Blackie sprang up, staring in a daze at the yellow honey bear hoodie.

Ivan said, “Blackie, it’s your favorite; honey bear.”

Blackie was speechless.

He glanced up at Ivan, then at the honey bear hoodie, then back at Ivan, then at the hoodie.

Its shiny eyes went wide and round, like two lights.

‘Ugh, you dumbass. Even if you’re busy making sweaters for other cats, I still love you, you dumbass, Blackie thought.

Everyone stood there, dumbstruck.

Sebastian, sitting in his wheelchair, pressed his fingers to his brow again, and again, and again.

Suddenly, Yeti, who’d been standing off to the side, twitched his fluffy white ears. Then, with a dramatic leap, he headbutted the giant bell hanging from the ancient tree.

The bell’s deep, resonant tone echoed far and wide.

And Yeti’s eyes, stark black and white, started spinning like dizzy spirals, and he howled dramatically. His howl reverberated through the skies above Sandridge Island.

Footsteps thundered in from every direction, and in no time, a crowd swarmed the square. The instant they spotted Sebastian sitting in his wheelchair, every young, good-looking face instantly turned respectful.

They shouted, “Mr. Gray.”

Sebastian fell silent.

This was exactly why he rarely came to the back hill; whenever he showed up, it always caused a commotion.

Someone asked, “Mr. Gray, did you come to see us?”

Even though the question was for Sebastian, all eyes instantly turned to Stella, who was standing beside him.

Everyone’s eyes shone brightly.

Stella fell silent.

Sebastian said, “Just here to borrow the kitchen for a bit.”

“The kitchen?” they asked. The moment they heard that, everyone went wild.

Annette looked puzzled. She asked, “Sebastian, what are they so excited about?”

‘Why does everyone look like they just won the lottery?’ she wondered.

“Ms. Carter, are you going to use the kitchen, too?” Maxim asked, shot his hand up, and finally asked what everyone was thinking.
