:

Butcher jerked his head up, a chill running down his spine.

A girl in black sat quietly in the tree. When he looked up, she smiled faintly at him through the dappled shadows and raised a hand.

Stella said, “Hey.”

The next second, her smile was gone as she leapt down in one smooth motion.

Butcher felt something like a thread coil around his neck. The moment he moved, blood welled up.

Stella said, “Trust me, you don’t want to move.”

Her hands tightened the thread on either side of Butcher’s neck, pulling it taut. Under the pale moonlight, a thin line could be seen wrapped around his throat. It spelled death.

Butcher gritted his teeth. “Who the hell are you?”

Stella replied softly, “Butcher, ranked No.7 on the Mercenary Rankings. The boss of this seven-man hit squad. You’re responsible for the Monterra subway poisoning eight years ago and the assassination of the Lorendor ambassador seven years ago. And five years ago-”

Stella listed his crimes one by one. She said, “Now, spill it. What’s your crew’s mission in Haliville?”

Her grip tightened, and the sharp thread cut into the flesh of Butcher’s neck.

Butcher thought, ‘How? She knows more than some foreign intelligence agencies.’

Butcher said, “I—”

Suddenly, a strange noise came from the corner.

Butcher was stunned.

Stella turned her head without expression and saw Ivan, with Blackie draped over his shoulder, shoving chips into his mouth.

When Ivan noticed her looking over, he paused. “Want some?”

He respectfully held the bag out toward Stella.

Stella actually took a moment to consider. “What flavor is it?”

Ivan said, “Wasabi.”

Stella said, “Oh, no thanks. Wasabi is not my thing.”

Butcher stared at them in disbelief. He thought, ‘I’m literally about to die, and you’re discussing chips, huh?

Chapter 214

:

Could you show a little respect? I’m a mercenary who’s killed more people than I can count.

Butcher was so mad.

Azure flare erupted across the sky again, lighting up the dense forest. Another codename vanished.

Butcher spoke through clenched teeth, word by word. “The gene virus antidote formula.”

Stella said, “So, you really are here for Sebastian.”

In that instant, Butcher felt a chill crawl down his spine, goosebumps rising everywhere.

Before he could even say a word, he heard a sharp crack, and his vision went black. He collapsed forward, his body pitching down, his head hitting the ground and going completely still.

“Ms. Carter,” Jake spoke from the shadows, slung Butcher over his shoulder, and vanished into the dark.

Stella drew the transparent thread back into her ring. A single drop of blood fell to the ground and was swallowed by the soil.

Stella raised her hand and ignited the green flare that belonged to Butcher, staring up at the sky without expression.

That left only blue and purple among the seven.

Ivan was crouched in the shadows, going to town on those chips. Blackie, draped over his shoulder, rolled its eyes. He said, “Ms. Carter, just leave the rest to the Yates family. Nothing to worry about.”

As he spoke, he began unfastening his oversized black coat.

Stella was taken aback.

However, inside Ivan’s black coat were rows of neatly packed bags of chips.

Ivan said, “There are other flavors.”

Stella was speechless.

Fifteen minutes later, the blue flare lit up the sky. Stella sat atop a towering tree, her legs hanging down, gently swinging.

She thought, ‘I wonder if Sebastian and Lucas will see this. I did this for them!

Another twenty minutes ticked by.

Stella propped her chin in her hands, feeling bored out of her mind. She had agreed to leave the last two mercenaries to the Yates family as practice, but she never expected it to take this long.

As the last purple Killflare rose into the sky, Stella’s eyes lit up at once.

Satisfied, she made a call.

An hour later, Theo said, “Ms. Carter, we’re here.”

Stella glanced up. “Okay.”

Staring at the big sign that read “Military Zone. No Lingering,” Theo hesitated, wondering if he should mention Red Shadow.

Just then, several men stepped out of a jeep beyond the imposing iron gate and hurried toward him.

Stella yawned sleepily and opened the door to get out.

She immediately saw Murray, who had come after receiving the call, walking out behind Hudson. It was obvious they had been waiting for some time.

Theo recognized them and quickly got out of the car to give a textbook salute.

Hudson waved him off and walked straight up to Stella. “Hey, kid.”

Stella opened the back door of the seven-seater that Theo was driving. Inside were seven people piled together, all knocked out cold. They were the same mercenaries whose Killflare had gone up earlier.

Murray hesitated. “Are they still alive?”

Stella said with a smile, “As I said, Mr. Gray is a man who plays by the rules, so I’m doing the same.”

Murray said, “But those flares-”

Stella’s smile grew even wider. “Once those Killflares go up, these seven are erased from the mercenary rankings, blacklisted for life. No crew will ever touch them again.”

She locked eyes with Hudson and sneered. “Right now, the seven in that vehicle are just ordinary people who entered the country illegally. That’s all.”

Internationally, mercenaries who lose their codenames were no longer protected by any organization. That meant they had to pay for the countless bloody crimes they had committed.
