Stella said, “First, digging up a grave without permission is illegal. Second, this city mandates cremation. Even if we dug her up, do you expect me to just look at her ashes?”

Emily had to admit Stella made sense, but something about it just felt off. “So, you actually considered digging up the grave, didn’t you?”

Catching on, Emily squinted at Stella.

Stella felt speechless. “We don’t need to dig. There’s something off about the whole thing.”

She lightly shook her glass, the ice clinking inside.

Emily said, looking unpleasant, “So, tell me, what’s the problem then?”

“Where are the others buried?” Stella asked.

Emily blurted out, “Come on, everyone knows that after that incident five years ago, Mr. Gray buried his three relatives on his private island.”

Getting excited, Emily waved at Chester, who’d been keeping his distance from Stella. “Hey, bring us some

snacks.”

Chester protested, looking a bit aggrieved. “This is a high-end bar. We don’t serve that kind of thing.”

Stella raised an eyebrow in anger.

Chester got serious right away. “I’ll go get it soon.”

In no time, several plates of bar snacks were brought over, along with an enormous fruit salad.

Emily blinked, speechless.

Stella lifted her gaze, unfazed. “What does this mean?”

Chester immediately pointed to a spot not far away.

They both looked where he was pointing.

Tony poked his head out and, seeing Stella’s gaze, quickly forced a flattering smile.

Stella glanced away and nudged the salad toward Emily. “Help yourself.”

Emily ate a few bites, finally easing her aching stomach after a six-hour surgery. “Then what?”

“What are Mr. Gray and his brother’s names?” Stella asked.

“Sebastian and Eric,” Emily replied. “Come on, everyone in Haliville knows that. Is there a problem?”

However, as soon as she said it, Emily froze. She suddenly slapped the table, eyes wide. “Wait, I remember it.”

Stella shot her a look and took a sip of her drink.

Now that Emily got it, she couldn’t help but exclaim, “Sebastian’s father must miss her very much. He once said that those two names were inspired by a woman named Bastienne.”

After a pause, Emily turned to Stella. “But what does any of this have to do with the grave?”

Stella sighed. She said, “Mr. Gray values his family. If nothing was off about the whole thing, then why would he leave Mrs. Gray’s tomb exclusively in Gray Family Cemetery?”

Emily’s eyes widened as she munched on a snack, realization dawning. “So, Mrs. Gray really isn’t dead, right? Then Mrs. Everhart, who showed up in my office today, was truly-”

She felt completely shocked.

Stella just shrugged. “I’m not sure.”

It was like someone had dumped a bucket of cold water over Emily, snapping her back to reality.

Munching on her snacks, Emily nodded. “Yeah, you’re right. This whole thing is just way too crazy.”

“But I think it’s true,” Stella added.

Emily was left speechless. She couldn’t help but toss a snack at Stella, thinking, ‘Come on, don’t keep me in suspense like that.’

Emily blurted out, “Wait, am I gonna get silenced by Mr. Gray or something?”

Stella shot her a strange look. “Sebastian won’t do that.”

Emily thought, ‘Seriously?’

“He’s only nice to you,” Emily retorted, rolling her eyes again.

“Still, thanks for what you did today,” Emily said, giving Stella a nod and raising her glass. “And I want to officially apologize for being so reckless the first time we met.”

Emily gave a sheepish smile. “You’re a good surgeon.”

Stella raised her glass and clinked it against Emily’s. “And you’re a great assistant.”

Both of them smiled casually, letting bygones be bygones.

“By the way, you were just trying to scare them with that Shark stuff earlier, right?” Emily asked, bringing her glass to her lips. “It was you who helped me fix my paper, after all.”

Stella lowered her gaze. “I’m Shark.”

Emily choked on her drink.

Stella casually grabbed a tissue and handed it to her.

Emily covered her mouth and sputtered, “What? For real?”

Stella thought, ‘Do you really need to be that shocked?’

Emily couldn’t stop laughing. “Seriously, that’s the funniest joke I’ve heard all week.”

She was laughing so hard.

Stella just shrugged. She thought, ‘Whatever. The more truthful you are, the more others think you’re joking.

“Yeah, I was just messing with them,” Stella said.

Emily wiped away her tears of laughter with a tissue. “I knew it.” She paused for a second. “Wait, those Dorestan Medical Alliance people-”

Stella shrugged. “Yeah, I’m their boss.”

Emily was left speechless.

The two of them locked eyes, and they both cracked up.

They kept drinking.

Not far away, Jake glanced at the message John had just sent him, his face twisting with a mix of confusion and awkwardness.

He thought, ‘Ms. Carter and Miss Chase seem to be having a good time right now. Maybe I should just wait a bit before I go over.

Half an hour later, Emily was totally buzzed, and Stella had to steady her with one arm.

“Stella, you’re the best,” Emily slurred, snuggling into Stella’s neck and rubbing her face against her.

Stella rolled her eyes, thinking, ‘Can you even stand up straight?’

Emily covered her mouth with both hands and shouted, “Stella, you’re just so damn awesome.”

With a deadpan look, Stella firmly pushed Emily’s face away from her neck. She thought, ‘If I’d known she was such a lightweight, I would’ve just swapped her drink for water!
